DOJ Honors Program Offers Are Coming Out: Open Thread
Back in September, we mentioned that interviewees for the DOJ Honors Program were learning of their good fortune. Now the process has proceeded one step further — for some lucky individuals, to completion.
We heard from one offer recipient from the Civil Division, but we suspect this person is not alone. According to the Key Dates section of the Honors Program website, job offers are being extended from November 6 through mid-December 2009. In mid-December, candidates not selected as finalists will be notified.
More info about the process, plus the chance to comment, after the jump.
If you haven’t heard back about an offer yet, don’t despair. From the Honors Program FAQ:
10. When are offers made? There is no set time, but we anticipate that most components will make first-round offers about 10 days after the end of formal interviews. The majority of the offers will be made from late October through December, but the process could extend into January and beyond.
11. Will I be notified if, after interviewing, I will not receive an offer?
The Department will notify all candidates who interviewed but were not selected to receive an offer, but the timing of this notice varies. Components make decentralized hiring decisions and frequently issue offers sequentially based on their internal ranking of candidates and the number of positions available. The component may issue a certain number of offers, then, depending on acceptances, may issue a second round, and occasionally a third round of offers. OARM issues final notice of non-selection only after a component reports that it has met its hiring requirements. All notifications are issued electronically.
To those of you who have secured places on the federal government lifeboat, congratulations. To those of you still waiting to hear, good luck.
Feel free to trade notes about which components have started making offers, in the comments.

Maybe there’s some sort of animal that we could make a sacrifice to. Like … a giant buffalo. Or some sort of monster, like something with the body of a walrus with the head of a sea lion. Something with a body of an egret, with the head of a meerkat. Or just the head of a monkey, with the antlers of a reindeer. With the body of a … porcupine.
No offer emails are also being sent out.
I got an offer. Quack.
I can't imagine that folks leveraged themselves out to a 6 figure sum so they could become part of Commissar Obama's Red Oktober brigade of lawyers. Is this what the American dream has become?

Any one out there working for Office of Immigration Litigation?
Care to share any tips on how to get a job there?
Dear PE,
I'm talking to the man in the mirror.
I got three offers. I am accepting them all.
first to say who cares about the DOJ honors program.
Has anyone heard from IRS Chief Counsel Honors Program?

If someone has gotten an offer from Civil Rights, would you mind posting to put the rest of us out of our misery of not knowing? Thanks!
Accepted my offer. SMU prestige baby.
14: Civil Rights gave at least one offer Friday.
These offers will of course reflect a cross-section of society, correct?
I don't want any of this "merit" nonsense.

Jealous?
Still waiting for a notification from my interview in October 2008...way to stay classy, DOJ.
slow news day
I got a BJ Honors offer from Winston today.
Accepted offer in Civ Division.
DOJ secure baby.
Why did somebody just punch me in the face?
howard sucks, why would anyone be jealous...
I received a letter from the Civil Rights Division. They said they were incited in my interest in keeping the white man down and defending Black Panther intimidation at voting booths.
This sounds like legitimate legal news, but I think we need some tangentially related fiction to keep it interesting:
Doom: Repercussions of Evil
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.
Anyone hear from antitrust?
IRS Chief Counsel Honors Program offers went out late last week. Dings will be emailed by Friday.
I just accepted all 3 offers from DOJ SVU.
Anyone hear from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Honors Program?
Anyone hear from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Honors Program? Or the Department of Transportation?
Suck my leathery nutsack Partner Emeritus. My pension will more than make up for lost income in private practice considering the continuing collapse of private sector law firms.
My pension >>>>>>>>>>>>> Future private sector benefits + compensation
Do we know if Civil Rights already extended all of its offers?
#32: You're on FERS. No real pension for you! Enjoy the same sucky 401(k) everyone has.

Are offers being extended by e-mail or phone call? Or both?
This comment is addressed to post no. 32.
It really brings me no pleasure to describe your sad life. A government job is ideal for individuals that lack drive and ambition. There is no accountability working in the public sector. Enjoy your paltry 2.3% annual raise along with your ability to wear dockers and worn loafers on the job. Enjoy driving that 3 or 5 series BMW or Volvo that will provide false cathartic relief to your ego. As for your pension, I see a steady diet of catfood, purina and alpo once you become a senior citizen. By this time next year, I will be living abroad as I watch this nation become bankrupt while folks like you scramble to live a meager existence. You can keep your mediocre government job with the generous benefits while knowing that animals like my pet Simeon live better than you ever will.
A friend of mine got a Tax (criminal) offer last week
Anyone hear from the Office of General Counsel at Rick's Cabaret?
Dear Partner Emeritus,
You always sound like a very unhappy person. I hope you feel better.
At 44-
I got an offer as a contract attorney for Rick's Cabaret. However, It's for ten hours a week during the chicks with dicks night.
PE:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves
break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes
and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
I know of two civil offers amongst my friends. One took it and one declined for a private sector opportunity. Congrats to those who got offers. It's not all about the money for everyone, I'm going private sector, but quality of life will be better for you gubment folks no doubt.

47 - ha ha!
Wait - are you serious?
48:
I hear you, I have a friend who works for the EEOC. 8:00 - 5:30 every day, pretty much a zero-stress environment, and interesting cases to boot. I don't begrudge my Biglaw job, but it's hard to not let jealousy creep in when you see how convenient government work can be.
49- Don't kid. The quality of life will suck for both. Carry on
50:
Yup.

What is the typical salary for these positions?
@ Partner Emeritus:
I suggest you--or one of your minions--review section 877A of the Internal Revenue Code. You can run, and you can hide--but only after you take care of certain obligations.

who gives a shit about the DOJ honors program?
Can anyone besides the one person on AutoAdmit confirm that federal programs has made offers?
Any news on the Department of Veterans' Affairs Honors Program?
offers have been made by the NEA
Welcome all!!! You may now rejoice in laughing at the firm fools
can anyone explain to me the draw of taking one of these jobs?
it pays lousy...
Who cares? They get Veterans Day off, and they can work up to a "G-13". So exciting. These jobs are for people who can't compete in the private sector.
DOJ Pathetic.
civil tax offer yesterday.
63- If you don't understand, no explanation will suffice. If you do understand, no explanation is needed.

@62
that is where you are wrong- biggov lawyers make more per hour then law firm associates
how are offers being extended? Call/Email/etc... Also, those that received an offer from Civil Rights, was it for a particular section or generally (assinging your section later).
Was the "ding" email that went out today for all honors program or a specific division/section
Thanks!
"OMG I got the best news! I better rush to tell my friends at ATL."
63: DOJ honors lawyers get promoted up to GS-15.
start at GS-11
6 months -> GS-12
+ 1 year -> GS-13
+ 1 year -> GS-14
+ 1 1/2 year -> GS-15
I was a GS-15/4 when I left for private sector. What a bad decision that was!
anyone hear from EOIR?
anyway hear from the DOJ summer intern program?
Take the federal government offers, people! The pay sucks for the first two years but after that it's fine. Having substantive, challenging work straight out of law school will pay off for the rest of your career. Second-year attorneys at my agency regularly outmatch the capabilities of the Big Law senior attorneys they go up against. I assume these people weren't always dumb, but after two or three years of only doing document review and such menial tasks, I think the legal analysis part of the brain just dies and never comes back to life.
We need to bomb women and children back to the stoneage baby!
-DOJ Secure
What's the lure of these jobs? Instead of doing discovery for a few years at a biglaw firm, you learn to try cases and then lateral into a big firm as a partner.
How difficult is it to get these positions? Are we talking LR as a necessity? From a T6. . . .
74 = law student.
a) You can't try a case without doing some discovery. A litigator that does not get down and dirty with the documents is useless.
b) The DOJ does discovery too.
c) Big firms now pay staff attorneys (not associates) to do the real shit discovery work.
Keep believing what the other 2Ls tell you.
31, DoT is doing callbacks as we speak (I'll try to find out what, if anything, they've said about offer timing if you're interested).
NRC had phone interviews in mid-late October, is doing callbacks the first three weeks in November, and is making offers around Thanksgiving.
42- I was hoping that you could share your experience living with incontinence over the last 70 years. How does your husband tolerate the terrible stench and constant stream of fluid(s) down your leg and pooling in your crocs?
76: You too must be a law student. Staff attorneys in BigLaw have been laid off ... so first-third year associates are doing a lot document review.
DOJ attorneys do document review too, but they do document for their own cases - not for some practice group in which you aren't even an associate - trying to build up those billable hours so you won't get your walking papers.
In this time of massive legal layoffs, any person should be happy to be government attorney secure. For those of you who received offers from DOJ, congrats to you, this was an extremely competitive year; the DOJ is the cream-of-the-crop for government attorneys; and you get to stand up in court and say that you represent the United States of America.
Anybody heard about the summer DOJ opportunities for 2Ls? I'm a finalist for the civil division, but I haven't heard anything about interviews...which I'm taking to be a bad sign, as I was notified about my status as a finalist more than a month ago.
80, I was in the paid summer intern program in the Civil Division in 2005. At least that year, they didn't do interviews. The first call i got was to tell me i got the job. It was great experience, but it also convinced me to work elsewhere in the federal government instead of DOJ. Litigation just wasn't my thing.

82 -- what type of masters? and what's your GS level?
Wait - Northeastern kepted tellsing me they're's the bestestest publick intrest skool in all of countree. Y's cannot I gets positioning at justise department of honours?
Unemployed Northeastern motherfucking 2007
my interviewer told me DOJ Honors apps were up 80% this year
2008: 150 spots, 600 interviews, 4000 apps
2009: 150 spots, 600 interviews, 7200 apps
80 - I'm in the same situation, haven't heard anything since I was selected for consideration or whatever they called it. I know several people that have heard no, so I'm guessing no news is good news.
Can anyone see their status on the Avue Central website? On Friday morning, my status read "Selected as Finalist."
Has anyone received an offer/been selected as a finalist for Federal Programs (Civil)?
87= my status says "No selection made" what division did you interview with?
what happened to the "selected as finalist" status?
80 again. My status used to say "selected as finalist," but now it's saying the thing about the selection being closed that either 86 or 87 were talking about. Still have no idea what that means, but I'm assuming it can't be good. I thought I'd get a phone call by now.
And why did they decide to change the avue format again? I was just getting used to the other format...
What sections for the Civil Rights Division have peoploe heard from?
Has anybody heard from the Civil Rights Division for the Summer Law Intern Program?
a friend of mine got an offer at federal programs last week
94: Was he/she a clerk or 3L? T14?
Please post any info you have on here: http://www.xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=1129047&mc=376&forum_id=2
96- I won't. The fact that you need to register for XO is a joke. I'll never register on that site for obvious reasons. They should open it up to guest comments.
Have heard that CRT offers went out on Friday. Does anyone know if the were given out by section or just generally? If it was by section can you post what Section you heard from??
CRT offers did go out last Friday and are division-wide, not section by section. So if you have not gotten a call by now, well, they're just not that into you. Not making fun here; I'm in the same boat, but unless someone declines an offer, CRT won't be making any more.
Anybody hearing back from Civil yet?
Still no offers from Antitrust?
99 - Are you talking about Honors or SLIP?
I'm pretty sure 99 was talking about Honors. Most of the comments here have related to Honors, and I also heard elsewhere that CRT Honors offers went out last Friday (at least some of them).
Here's a thread relating to SLIP: http://www.xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=1133705&mc=11&forum_id=2
Any offers from EOIR honors?
yes offers from Fed Programs have gone out. I know because I got one. hooray!
77 - any word on dot honors offers?
Has anyone rejected their offer from the Civil Rights Division?
to 107, I hope so... what does your status say on avue? I'm wondering if those at least on a "waiting list" have their status as a "finalist"? Mine says "no selection made" and I am trying to find out if that means I am not even on a "waiting list"
108 - I wouldn't put too much stock into what Avue says. If you had an interview, you would be on the "waiting list." If you didn't, you are not. But, again, being on such a list would only matter if someone rejected an offer.
105: Stats? (3L or clerkship, school range, class rank, l. rev, etc.)
109-thanks. I had an interview ... I guess I just was wondering? gotta hope for something ;)
109-thanks. I had an interview ... I guess I just was wondering? gotta hope for something ;)
To 108, mine says "no selection made."
Has anyone heard whether the Criminal Division has given offers yet?
Any other news on IRS Honors?
FYI - Civil Rights told me in my interview that they were hiring people to the division generally and accepted attorneys select their specific section early next year. Still haven't heard from them - am I screwed?
Any offers from OIL? Thought they were supposed to go out this week
I was rejected by OIL so it is good if you have not heard
118- Thanks. Can you tell me if it was the district court or appellate branch?
I've heard of one rejection from the Crim Division. But I haven't heard anything else. Has no one else heard anything from the Crim Division?
120 -- Same here. Heard of one Crim rejection, but haven't heard of any offers yet. Still hoping.
Has anyone heard from EOIR?
Has anyone heard from EOIR?
Anything from IRS Honors? Someone on here said offers went out two weeks ago and rejections were to be emailed by 11/13 - I've heard nothing.
I know of one IRS rejection, and myself and a classmate both got rejections from DEA.
Anyone hear from DOT?
I got an email from EOIR indicating that I had been selected as a finalist, but not given a first round offer, and that second round offers would not be going out until after the budget passed. Anyone know what this means - does it mean when second round goes out, we will be selected, or simply we didn't get first round offers, but are still in the running, along with lots of other people? (got the email this afternoon.)
I haven't heard yet from the DEA- references were called- but nothing....anyone know what this means? Did rejections just go out in the mail or email?
126 - apparently DOT will be making offers in early december. word from head of recruitment.
I got the same EOIR email and conclude that it is a bit ambiguous re: exactly where I stand as far as a current or future offer. I take it that we who got this are the second-tier candidates and will get offers if there is enough budget and/or enough first-tier candidates decline their offers

Also got the ambiguous EOIR email. Can anyone tell us if there are EOIR rejection letters floating around out there? If they are, then us ambiguous guys can know that we are on a list of budget-dependent positions and not just part of a huge wait-and-see list. Sorry if you got rejected, but your misery could help the rest of us ride out the wait!
Anything from Army Corps or NRC honors or ASLBP?
Anything from Army Corps or NRC honors or ASLBP?
Does anyone have any more info. on the DEA?
EOIR update. Many people who interviewed did not get the ambiguous email, perhaps indicating that those who did are in fact second tier and may get offers if the slot is funded. I'm guessing that those who got no email will get a rejection letter soon.
Has anyone heard from OIL? Have their first round offers gone out?
129-Do you know why DOT is waiting until December? They said before Thanksgiving at the interviews.
