1L’s Promising Pundit Career Cut Short Because of Harvard Law Finals?

jeremy haber.jpgJeremy Haber’s star rose and and fell before we had a chance to draft a post. Haber is a first year student at Harvard Law School and recently made the finals in the Washington Post’s “America’s Next Great Pundit” contest. From the Harvard Crimson via ABA Journal:

Jeremy L. Haber, a first year student at the Law School, is one of four finalists remaining in the Post’s “America’s Next Great Pundit” contest, the winner of which will write 13 weekly op-ed columns on a topic of his choice.

Haber, who said he entered the contest on an impulse, has emerged from over 4,800 entrants to outlast six other finalists — including a Nobel laureate in physics, an assistant secretary of commerce in the Bush administration, and a Middle East expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

These are the columns that got him into the final rounds. Unfortunately, some other finals got in the way of his punditry. He is a 1L and it is mid-November…

We asked Haber how he was balancing the contest with his 1L fall semester:

Short answer to your question above is “poorly.”

Haber was slightly relieved then to be eliminated from the contest last night. The judges said:

Jeremy impressed us with his energetic reporting. The round two judges suggested he could be America’s Next Great Reporter. And round three judge Gene Weingarten declared that Jeremy had the best answer of the Q&A: “There is a leadership vacuum on both sides.” (Responding to a question on the Middle East.) Jeremy, we look forward to reading and hearing more from you.

Jeremy told us:

Been very challenging to do competition and school work, but thankfully just enough time to catch up before exams.

Unfortunately, punditry skills don’t tend to come in handy for 1L exams. (Or so Elie tells us.) Someone give this guy an outline.

I suppose that I should know the answer to this, but is Harvard Law School fully accredited by the American Bar Association and a member in good standing of the Association of American Law Schools?

This headline is misleading: the Harvard 1L's promising career was cut short because he was eliminated from the contest.

Do you get a deep throating fee from HLS for each mention of some assbasket doing nothing of particular worth in an incomplete, runner-up sort of fashion? If you don't, you should really look into that.

Wow, I wish I'd known about this contest. This guy cannot write to save his life. First, most of his articles are interviews, which doesn't show any skill other than access to people. And while that may be a legitimate skill, it conveys nothing about his intellect, his viewpoints, or the quality of his writing. Second, his posts are full of numerous grammatical errors that make me cringe. Seriously, I wish I had known about this contest.....

29 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, November 18, 2009 4:40 PM

Now, this is a story all about how his life got flipped, turned upside down, if you will. It'll likely take a minute, so just sit right there, and I'll tell you how he became the prince of a town called Bel Air.

Here is why I am lost, who cares about finals????
He is in Harvard. It is pass/fail. Worry about the contest (it will set him apart on his resume from the rest of the TFB's who attend Harvard since grades won't help him)

Gentlemen at the legal preparatory academy with which I was once affiliated, which is the selfsame institution mentioned in the posting to which this response is appended, were, in fact, NOT in the habit of obtaining carnal knowledge of attractive women, for indeed there were precious few persons meeting such a description to be found in the general vicinity of Langdell and its associated buildings. Gentlemen who claimed otherwise were possessed of a deplorable lack of standards and, as noted by a predecessor posting herein, condemned to eternal hellfire for so claiming. While the gentlemen were, as a result of the situation described here, somewhat frustrated, this was not considered to be particularly significant, particularly since the difficulties faced by the gentleman was representative of most legal preparatory academies.
