Judge of the Day: Call of Duty Calls Judge to Miss Duty
How many people out there are mainlining Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? I’m not. Apparently, I need to practice for my upcoming Soul Calibur demolition of ATL commenters. But I’ll probably pick COD2 for the holiday season.
A British judge didn’t have my sense of patience:
Now, as the story has it, a county judge in Britain with 15 years of service (who will remain anonymous) went out and waited an hour in-line for the midnight launch of Modern Warfare 2. The 48-year-old said he was “like Charlie waiting outside the chocolate factory”. That’s a pretty intense statement from a district county judge with a wife and two kids at home.
When he finally got his copy, he did what any other 14-year-old person would do, he played it. All night long.
Obviously, that made showing up for work the next day a little bit difficult.
If you have ever spent all night playing a video game, you know what happens at work the next day. You don’t show up:
The judge was so excited that he played “long into the night” and was obviously too busy trashing every 13-year-old who dared cross him to remember his obligation to society. So, like any good gaming-addict, he called in sick to work.
I wonder how the judge reacted to the COD2’s already infamous airport scene? Did he gun through the level, killing civilians with unmitigated glee? Or was he somber and reflective, holding his fire for the women and children but wasting the men who were asking for it?
Something tells me that this won’t be the last legally related story arising out of COD2.
In any event, some people weren’t too happy that the judge called in sick:
The issue here is how his irresponsible actions probably wasted county taxpayer money and time. It’s one thing to be a kid and do this and another to be a 48-year-old judge and do it.Grow up, man.
You know what, I do not want my judge to be presiding over my fate after he spent thirteen hours gunning down Russian terrorists. I don’t want it for the same reason I don’t order Chinese food after my Asian land war strategy fails (again) in Civilization IV. I don’t think that video games ever made anybody do anything, but all things being equal, I’d rather have a judge that has had a little time to adjust back into real world after his virtual killing spree.

Anyone know what his game ID is?
How about a open thread on 2Ls without offers. Let's start to get an idea of just how lost the Lost Generation of 2011 really is.
I'm not even goint to comment b/c this story is so pointless.
I beat MW2 but I suck so I was playing Recruit difficulty. I gunned down everybody I could in the airport. When I think about the video game awesomeness awaiting me when *I'm* 50, I get all tingly.
what's with the nerd-tastic video game posts lately
Let he who has never called in sick for a personal reason cast the first stone.
Shouldn't it be "Judge of the Day: Call of Duty CAUSES Judge to Miss Duty," or "Judge of the Day: Call of Duty Causes Judge TO CALL to Miss Duty?"
7, is right. I called in to buy my BMW.
"I don’t think that video games ever made anybody do anything . . . " Violent? Anti-social? Aggressive against walruses? Not once, ever? In the history of video games?
You see, I intentionally failed to include an object in that sentence so as to entice you the reader to engage in a little mental gymnastics. Really, my incomptence is for your benefit.
Oh, and I also believe in mad-made global warming. The science with respect to man-made global warming is much more sound than that related to the link between anti-social behavior in children and violent video games.
I know this because Climategate doesn't exist. After all, it's not in the New York Times.
NEW YORK TIMES SECURE
I definitely gunned down everyone in the airport. It made the ending of that particular level all the more effective.
If you buy CoD2 this Christmas you will be about five years late.

Hey I am trying to get an ATL CIV 4 Game going! Post here today if you are down. (thanksgiving is a great time to spend with my fellow ATL readers)
The judge, plaintiff, defendant, and all witnesses could have conducted a trial through in-game voice chat while gunning down each other in deathmatch.
10--good show. why no coverage of the global warming hoaz being exposed. there is a legal component to the email release you know.
Civ 4 might be the greatest game ever made, with the possible exception of Civ 2. It is rediculous how "I'm just going to put in about 15 minutes" becomes 3 hours of your life. It is also rediculous that even after the game ends, you feel the need to play another 300 years just to completely wipe everyone off the map. Win or lose, there can be no survivors. Most addictive game ever.
I thought this would be about a judge who had to leave the bench lest he crap his pants.
12 isn't just using hyperbole -- COD2 != COD:MW2.
I remember when I got Jedi Outcast II for Game Cube, I played for 48 consecutive hours (with the help of a whole lot of mountain dew and weed, I really miss being an undergrad!!), then realized I had to drive 4 hours up north on no sleep. I was literally seeing storm troopers on the side of road in the snow. Needless to say I didnt tell my passengers I was hallucinating because of sleep deprivation and was more concerned with not getting shot by a storm trooper than staying on the road. By some miracle I made it, slept for 20 hours, and realized it was on the short list of dumbest things I have ever done.
Kick ass game though!!
Judge Halverson is apparently addicted to Wii Fit.

Does Kash take every other day off?
haha - 18, I did too.
17. Agree that the only contender to Civ 4 is Civ 2 (pyramids should equal granaries and I will not argue about it). Of course, I'm expect that the next even numbered Civ, due out in my forties, will be a worthy entry into the discussion -- by then Sid will have figured out how to fully incorporate terrorism and global warming, and they'll finally figure out how to make command of rivers and other topographical features the key to pre-industrial dominance.
The best thing I can say about that game is that it is the only game that I still enjoy while I'm losing. I've played games all the way through to the end when my goal from about 1,000 AD on was simply to stay alive or un-vassal my people.

why did he tell anyone the reason he wasn't coming in to work?
13 here, admitted fail I guess! Still playing Nazi Zombies on COD5... Still haven't purchased the new one. Although I guess with prestige edition it'll be CHECK YOU NV GOGGLES
Elie
I don't know that there is any magic to the even numbered theory. The reason that Civ 3 sucked was that Sid was not in control of that game. Someone else made it. And they did a terrible job. Sid was busy at the time making his civil war game (Gettysburg and Antietam). That was a fun game as well, especially the gettysburg part. Fans of first person shooters will not like it, but it was battlefield strategy that stayed true to the historic battle.
Sid does need to figure out how to deal with pollution, the way it is right now always makes me angry. As soon as you get a really good city you start losing tiles. You are correct that geography in terms of major shipping lanes/rivers/mountain passes, etc. should factor more prominantly in the pre industrial era.

Elie-
You are wasting valuable training time.

26 - Definately Elie, play the glaring typo game.
enough with the nerd talk. elie--you're a black nerd, we all know the other black kids picked on you just like they picked on us white kids and yet you cling to this blackness thing out of some sense of camaraderie or pity or god only knows. come off of it already. you;re a nerd. embrace it.

PE is gone. I pleaded last week for the appropriate steps to be taken to ensure his return (stopping the murder mstery novel). PE made it clear that as long as the murder novel was published he would not return. Now he has made good on that threat. Alas, I'm off to the WSJ Law Blog.
Also, Madden '94 on Genesis = Best game ever.
I would be curious to find out his MP handle. I hope it's "iamtheLAW," or "[JDGS]p3wnersh!p."
I try to stay at least one installment behind in a video game series in order to save money (especially for the Maddens and Tiger Woodses, etc.). Looking forward to Call of Duty 4.
This thread proves that lawyers and law students are all nerds. This might be the first time I have ever seen an ATL post approach 40 comments without seeing something along the lines of "Call of DuTTTy."
I don't think Sid had much of anything to do with Civ 4, either, besides owning the company that published it. AFAIK it's the new production lead, Soren Johnson, behind most of the changes.
Does anyone else not like the new scoring in MW2 compared to MW1 and/or CoD 5?
40
per wikipedia, the game was designed by Johnson under the direction of Sid and Firaxis
It says that civ 3 was under johnson and jeff briggs, with brigs being the game designer and johnson being the game programmer.
I think Sid and Firaxis in their supervisory roles played a pretty big role in the civ 4 design, while johnson played more of a programmer role while assuming the title of designer. He did do the AI work, but I think a lot of the overarching sort of stuff is still Sid's.
Civ fans = absolute NERDS

Fair enough then.
But, ignoring Elie's "even number" theory, I see no reason to expect that Civ V will be anything other than spectacular.
Almost undoubtedly worth buying a new computer for it.

I'm only in the 30's (I had an international trip for a week and thought it would have been inapproriate to bring the PS3 along)
Yeah, that would have been awkward. I'm pretty limited too - I feel guilty playing until my wife and kids are all asleep. (I am old. Not as old as the judge.)
kids maybe, but the wife should be tolerant of it
this game is probably going to cause me to fail out of law school.

She should be, but she isn't. She is good people otherwise, so I STFU and make the little sacrifice.

I spent the entire bar summer playing MW1 instead os studying for the bar, you'll be fine.

I am not letting myself purchase this till exams are over.

60,
Harder than "Mile High Club" on Veteran difficulty?
Mile High Club was tough... don't get me wrong. It took me a solid three hours to get it just right. Some of the special ops in MW2 that I have tried are as hard if not harder. The others are just damn cool and still challenging. There's one where you're on a bridge and fighting your way forward... I won't ruin it, you'll have to try it and see how awesome it looks for yourself.
There are a few that require you to play with a friend but that seems to be the minority from what I've seen.
- 60
I wish you could do the C130 mission in spec-ops without a buddy. I would just replay that shit all day long on single player.
62
I hate that bridge with a passion that can't be expressed in words.
-41
Does Call of Duty involve 2 x fully loaded F-16s and a gritty African American Air Force Reserve pilot? If so I'm buying it immediatly. Please advise.
Yes and there is less homoeroticism than in the Navy version of the game you speak of
41 - the bridge was tough but I actually found it to be one of the easier ones... The first snow / sniper level is a different story on the most difficult setting.
- 60 / 62
60
I am fucked then.
-41
The hardest spec ops I have played so far is the one where you have to defend the gas station/burger town/whatever from hundreds of russians, two BMGs, predator drones, and 4 helis. Pull-my-hair-out Insanity.
COD2 is sick.
This judge deserves a medal (in game, of course).
I would just like to inform you that the game is Modern Warfare 2, also known as Call of Duty 6. It is not Call of Duty 2, which came out in 2005.
Elie,
You're a prime example of a mis-informed blogger. I swear, it's way too easy to have an audience nowadays.
First off, It's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and it's the 6th game in the franchise. Calling it COD 2 is 100% incorrect.
Secondly, the Russian airport scene is just one scene in the game, and you don't spend 20 hours killing civilians. You're just trying to be dramatic. And you don't have to shoot them. So misinformed.
Finally, I wonder all the reasons why you've "called in sick" during your career? Best friend's b-day party the night before? Drinking with your alumni buddies? Maybe, just maybe, this game is just an incredibly compelling and engrossing entertainment experience, and this judge was thoroughly enjoying it. But I'm guessing you wouldn't know this since you haven't played the game, but feel like you can comment intelligently on the subject.
Unfortunately, you can't. Go get informed before you get on a soapbox.
laughable nerdrage.
i should double tap you.
