New York Bar Exam Results Will Be Posted Tomorrow, New Jersey Goes Up Next Week

New York Statue of Liberty.jpgIt is the most frightening time of the year for prospective lawyers. The New York State Bar Exam results will be posted tomorrow. As other states have posted results, we’ve seen that this year the “pass or you’re fired” feeling is strong.

Here’s the results preview from the New York Board of Law Examiners:

Important Notice for JULY 2009 BAR Exam Takers:

The results from the July 2009 bar examination will be made available to candidates, by e-mail, on November 5, 2009. You must ensure that you can accept emails from barresults@nybarapply.org. There will also be a link on this website to privately view your individual result by mid-day.

A list of the candidates who passed the examination will be made available to the general public on Friday, November 6, 2009.

People who took the bar in New Jersey will have to wait another couple of days:

July 2009 Bar Results - Bar results are expected to be mailed on Monday, November 9, 2009. Results are expected to be posted by Candidate ID number on Monday at 4:00 pm. ID numbers and/or addresses will NOT be given or verified for security reasons.

One piece of advice as you wait for this important information: alcohol is your friend.

The bar exam results will spell relief for area firms that need pretextual justification to layoff associates that haven't even started their employment. It will be a very depressing holiday season for many bar failures. And remember, if you fail on your first try, you may pass on your second, third or fourth attempt but you will never be able to conifdently claim that you were a first time passer. If you don't think it matters, when I was on the hiring committee, "did you pass the bar exam on your first try?" was usually my second or third question during the interview. That is all.

FYI everyone:

http://buffalo.bizjournals.com/buffalo/stories/2009/11/02/daily31.html

Overall, 72 percent of those who took the exam passed. American Bar Association graduates taking the test for the first time had the highest passing rate, 88.2 percent, while foreign educated test-takers saw the lowest percentage of success, 38.5 percent.

A look at the numbers, broken down by a variety of demographics:

Demographic — Passing rate:
All candidates — 72%
First-time takers — 80%
ABA graduates — 83.6%
ABA graduates, first time — 88.2%
NY ABA law schools — 83.2%
NY ABA law school, first time — 88.1%
Out of state ABA law schools — 84%
Out of state ABA law schools, first time — 88.3%
Foreign educated — 38.5%
Foreign educated, first time — 46.2%

Good times.

4 - I've heard that rumor, too. But the Texas Board of Law Examiners website has not changed in the last week and they say explicitly that the pass list will be released on friday. And over 5000 visits have been recorded in that week (none by me until I checked it today). On what authority do you say it will be tommorrow?

I had to research that very issue as a summer and, as it turns out, they admitted a manatee, two polar bears (though one was pro hac), and eight(!) harbor seals - but never a walrus. What it comes down to is discrimination against tusked animals.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners congratulates you on passing the New York State bar examination held on July 28-29, 2009. An official certification notice has been mailed and will contain your Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) scaled score. The notification which has been mailed is a required part of your application for admission to the Bar. In order to allow a reasonable time for the exam results to arrive by mail, requests for duplicate notices will not be accepted until after November 27, 2009. Although there is normally a $10 charge for a duplicate, due to the possibility of loss or damage in a bulk mailing, there will be a grace period with no charge for those requests received prior to December 9, 2009.

So, as 70 says, I guess people who pass NY get to find out their MBE scores.

I took (and passed) MA, and I have no clue what my MBE score was. How many other states never tell you your MBE score? I looked on the NCBE website, and apparently even if you pay them for their "service," they won't reveal your score if you took the test in MA.

Would it be that hard to let people know how they did on at least the multiple choice portion? People might want to move, after all.

MBE scores allow one to waive into D.C. (for those who suddenly decide to be prestige whores) or Minnesota (for whose who become Vikings fans). They can also carry over into a later iteration of the NY bar exam for up to two years, I believe.

Lordy, little more frustrating that studying so much for a test and never knowing at all how you did on it, beyond that you scored above a very low percentile.

Probably not. But if you do have a legal aid offer in hand, and game, she might. She probably blindly believes that all lawyers are fabulously wealthy. That is why she is fucking you. But surely, within a few months of work, she will figure it out. So it will be the same result, only she will have invested more into the relationship, and therefore be more angry. As she leaves, she will tell everyone what a tiny pecker you have, and probably say something about how you hit her while she was pregnant. Your life is fixing to suck.

Your law professors were not the ones that passed up the opportunity to actually do the assigned reading in order to bang that tranny after law review. Similarly, no tenure committee whatsoever has ever considered bar scores regarding professor performance. This is much like the fact that no law school dean has ever fired a recruiter for saying "Dont worry about the debt- our graduates almost never have a problem repaying that quickly."

You were dumb when you went to law school. Even though you are not that much smarter now if you cannot even pass a test of basic competancy, you should be smart enough to realise that you, and you alone, were the one that just got shit on. Dont try to bring others into this.

k, this is my first time posting on abovethelaw although I am an avid reader.

First, to those schmuks who keep lying about results being out, the rest of us have entire careers ahead of us to teach you what your mama should have taught you.

Second, for the guy or gal who keeps asking, you will not see if you passed or failed in the email. It will have a link to the sight where you can put in your security info and see the score. That's why the system crashes.

Also, it is quite likely that they will stagger the uploading of results (and the emails) because they staggered them when we got emails to login into some site and choose our testing location.

There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm deferred, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed to Winston over Skadden and Jones Day. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this deferred associate is all that's left. I got to live with that. Deferral Stipend? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and send your checks, Winston, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

Anyone who actually gives even an ounce of credence to the comments about "receiving an email" or "the results are up" probably failed the bar anyway. Talk about gullible!

For the rest of you, I PROMISE you'll receive an email when the results are out. You all passed (unlike those above), so I'd recommend just taking a deep breath and relaxing. Hitting refresh over and over just slows down the server, wastes your time, and will only guarantee that you get your results about 15 seconds sooner than I do.

Dear BOLE:

I am fortunate enough to be currently employed, however, your failure to send out timely emails regarding my bar results has caused me to be extremely unproductive this morning. In order to ensure a productive billing day, I sincerely request that you immediately send out results so I and others may restore our focus to work-related tasks.

Sincerely,
Employed (hopefully soon to be) attorney ready to beat any partner who has the guts to ask me about bar results.

I just called the folks at BOLE to ask about this link and spoke to a woman who said no emails had gone out and that she didn't know anything about this link. She even refused to try looking at it "I'm not typing in any strange websites here at this office- I'm not looking for any trouble right now. The only website I know about is nybarexam.org."

Where did that link come from?

Also, the website appears to be registered out of Virginia.

http://abovethelaw.com/2008/11/new_york_bar_exam_results_are.php

avatar
346 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 10:15 AM

If the link is fake then it has real access to the BOLE computer system. I clicked on the link provided for those who forgot their BOLE ID Numbers, and got an e-mail, with my correct BOLE ID Number, from the EXACT same e-mail address that sent me my BOLE number and confirmation after I filed my application. (yes i still have that e-mail, don't ask me why)

Furthermore, the link posted above had an "internal service error" message from last night until about 9 this morning. Could it be that the error was because BOLE was uploading the results? Likely. otherwise it would be an amazingly elaborate scam.

That being said, I guess it's possible that someone could have hacked into the system and posted erroneous results for real test takers. I would really like that confirmation e-mail if you please

Assuming it's true that you get a half (this is anonymous after all), Bar Bri said grades are scaled, so possibly when they scale your grade you go a half.

avatar
390 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:01 AM

388 -- I passed (according to the private lookup), first name starts with B, but no e mail yet.

159.9 scaled here, so not just half points.

170 scaled MBE. Do they release the percentile?

avatar

304 - they issue a "bar prize" to the top 3 test takers. Breakfast with the Governor (6:00am on a Sunday) is one of the rewards.

avatar
412 Posted by fenwaysteve | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:39 AM

Glad I could help all you guys by posting it, I found the link late last night. It was really funny seeing all the "is this link real?" comments, as I'm one of the few on here who actually has an account on ATL. Don't you think it would have been from 'anonymous' if it were fake?

avatar
413 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:39 AM

I am not satisfied with just passing and no E-MAIL.

avatar
414 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:41 AM

Ah, let 'em brag a little bit, 408. 174 is pretty freaking high. On the other hand, if you are actually the loser who crushed a MINIMUM COMPETENCY test to that degree, you need to re-evaluate your priorities. You could have spent a lot more time this summer drinking and screwing.

avatar
415 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:42 AM

407, where on the BOLE website did you find instructions on changing your contact email?

avatar
419 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:53 AM

418 it didn't help, the bar examiners said i need to fax them my new e-mail address with idenitfying info

avatar
420 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:55 AM

It is amost noon and no e-mail. Was the poster correct that if you haven't received an e-mail by 9 am that means you failed and the failed e-mails will go out by 1 pm?

avatar
421 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:56 AM

420, yes I'm afraid it's true. I'm sorry. I'm sure you'll pass next time!

avatar
422 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:56 AM

420, I don't think so---I've seen threads where people who have failed have already received emails.

avatar
423 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, November 5, 2009 11:57 AM

No email = you failed. You failed = bottom 10% of U.S.-educated first-time takers. Bottom 10% = probably shouldn't have gone to law school, certainly won't be a lawyer anytime soon.

HTH.

Before it said the notice "has been sent," and now it says "An official certification notice will be emailed to the email address currently on file with the Board". Sooo maybe BOLE realizes they screwed up sending everyone emails...
