Bar Exam Results Open Thread: New York Today, Texas Tomorrow

New York bar exam Texas bar exam.jpgCongratulations to everyone who passed the New York bar exam. To those who did not pass, we wish you good luck if and when you take it again.

As we noted last night, results were scheduled to be made available to exam takers today and to the general public tomorrow. But it seems that the NY bar exam results are already available to all, courtesy of Buffalo Business First. To see whether your law school friends (or enemies) passed (or failed), click here and use the alphabetical dropdown menu.

The next big state set to release its bar exam results: Texas.

[T]he official day for Texas Bar results to come out is tomorrow, but historically (wtf that means) the bar results have come out the Thursday before, which is today.

I realize telling you this probably will result in the more visits to the site and it crashing, but oh well. Law examiners should just state a specific time that results will be posted and stick to that.

Since our last bar exam thread has about 450 comments (and counting), we thought a new open thread might be in order. Here you go. Enjoy.

The bar exam is getting easier every year. According to the firm administrator, no associate at the firm failed. These associates may breathe easier for the day since they have received a reprieve on their eventual termination. Hybrid tough love is coming and this will be a November to remember.

My Dearest Poster 64 (a person presumptively the same as my even dearer poster 20):

I must admit that you have done an absolutely fantastic job of eviscerating poster 57 for his grammatical mistakes. I'm sure that poster 57 will cry himself or herself to sleep tonight, certain that the errors you have wisely highlighted were irrefutable proof of his or her incompetence rather than properly informal elisions of vestigial grammatical necessities. Poster 64-slash-20, you have certainly proven yourself a more competent person than poster 57 [has proven himself or herself to be]. I bow before your impressive knowledge of true grammatical errors and your unparalleled sense of proper voice in an online forum.]

74 - I took Kaplan PMBR and passed the bar.

The program is fine. Very different from BarBri. PMBR's approach is question based. And when taking notes you are not filling in the blank like BarBri.

I don't know which is better. But you can pass with PMBR.

Also PMBR questions resemble the actual MBE questions.

The live class for PMBR was at the Hotel Penn on 34st in Midtown (across the street from MSG).

Three other people in my class this summer, also passed.

I hope this helped.

98,

Working 9 hour days and studying for the bar exam is impressive. Having to take a break every 3 hours to feed your newborn and hold it, unimpressive. 88's comment that "those who didnt pass have no excuse" prompts my being unimpressed with her having to hold a newborn baby a few hours a day -- something that a family member can surely help with.

Had 88 not been such a douche, I'd be more impressed with her having a newborn and passing the bar exam. Her doucheyness negates any "wow" factor her situation may have otherwise awarded her.

@97 - presume that the books/recordings/video is covered by a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use. If that is the case, then you are in breach of the license terms if you re-sell without bar/bri consent.

I believe, however, that they may buy the books back...

I looked on Craigslist for books a while back--everyone sells them for $250. But the BARBRI book deposit is $250. So it doesn't matter if you sell it back to BARBRI or elsewhere, because if you try for more than $250 potential buyers will just get from someone else. And you might have to ship something or meet up awkwardly with a bar hopeful--no thanks.

No email here either. And even though it says BOLE's office hours are until 5 pm on the site, if you call their number, the recording says their hours are 8:30am-4:30pm.

I spoke to someone and she just said the emails are still going out, and that I could rely on the website.

But of course. In keeping with our commitment for establishing affirmative policies to promote opportunities for historically disadvantaged peoples, the board of law examiners has a "plus" system for black test takers.

In California, though, the physical letter that you receive in the U.S. mail from the State Bar of California is controlling over any electronic mail or website posting published beforehand.

If this is in the case in New York as well, technically none of you are safe.

Hey, I'm from Barcelona and I guess I am one of the few who unfortunately were out of luck in this exam.. (or didn't study enough..) I got 140 on the MBE but with a final score of 664.34... (the file only states 664 but if you do the maths with the other results they provide you get up to 664.34!)
Are you kidding me? There is no 0.66 of a point anywhere in a 8 hour LAW exam?!?!!
And that's not all. According to the rules and the average system they follow, it is almost certain that I would have past had the second examiners been the first to grade my exam!
Therefore, I can only congratulate those first examiners who kindly made my next months pretty miserable..
Does anyone have ever heard about the possibility to have, at least, the exam points recalculated..? 'cause this is surrealistic... I know they kindly inform in capital letters that I'm f***ed w/o possibility of review or appeal, but this should not include recalculation, right?

Anyway, congratulations to all of you who passed!!

what MBE score do you generally need to pass, assuming you do equally well on NY day and MBE day?

I got a 151 (thought I failed the MBE after I took it but didn't find NY day that bad) and am wondering how much leeway that left for NY day

@247: Wrong. A 135 on the MBE is high enough to pass so long as you get 5s on the essays, which effectively means anything over 4.5 on the essays, since they round up the scores. It's not really that hard to do that.

249 - NY state day (which includes the MPT) is worth 60% of the score, so yeah it is "state day heavy".

I think NY is a state heavy day (worth 60%). I scored a 137 on the MBE, which is not great but I must have either done stellar on the essays or passed by the skin of my teeth. Either way, I passed!

does anyone know what firms are doing with incoming associates who failed? it's probably too early to tell, but I'm worried about a friend who I didn't see on the public list

262 - great question. I would assume that so few people failed that it is a non-issue for the firms. They will probably give them a second chance to avoid the bad publicity. But who knows...

127 on the mbe was good enough to pass, assuming you killed the essays.

anyone know when the ny bar journal publishes the list of names?

264 - the public list of names is available on the BOLE website: http://www.nybarexam.org/ExamResults709/July2009Results.htm

251 & 252, Confirmed.

If you have not yet received an e-mail, call the BOLE. They will confirm your e-mail, and if it is correct, they will resend your e-mail. If it is not correct, they will ask you to send them a fax with your updated e-mail and BOLE ID. They will then send a duplicate e-mail.

265- I'm interested in keeping stealing all the copies of the Journal in my office so I can use the results page as Christmas present wrapping paper. I'll keep one for myself.

264,

Please, in no way take my post to be antagonistic, but how do you know one can pass with a 127 MBE score? Did you yourself pass with that score?

I ask because The NCBE says the minimum passing score in NY is 133. See pg 22:

That was a joke.

Signed, someone who scored higher than you

273: 264 here. 127 was my score. And the asterixed footnote on page 23 explains how I could have passed. I know others with scores below the 133 who passed. I know I nailed all the essays and the MPT, which explains this.

Yeah baby ... P.A.S.S.E.D. that sucker for the green & gold. Ozzie! Ozzie! Ozzie! Oi! Oi! Oi! (which, btw, I acknowledge is the lamest shout out going, but it's not everyday you get to pass the New York bar)

You can definitely pass with below a 130. You need a 133 if you do average (5s) on the essay. If you do well above 5s on the essays, you dont need as much on the MBE side, its a composite score.

Simple math. I did well on the MBE side (146) and not as well on the essays, but passed because they balanced each other out.

You fail if one side is well below "average"

280,

How do you know how you fared on the essays?
