They are against the death penalty as a matter of principle, but are willing to throw their principles aside in certain circumstances, which eviscerates the whole notion of a position based on principle. Many (not all) death penalty opponents make exceptions to their opposition when it happens near or somehow affects them, or when someone did something really horrible. Either exception shows the speaker has no right to claim the moral high ground, since they are willing to discard their moral opposition when they choose.

Um, the Attorney General doesn't "work for" the President, at least in any customary sense of the word. There's this whole thing about the need for the Attorney General to exercise legal judgment independent of political concerns from the White House.
