Orrick is Recruiting Again
Back in July, Orrick told people exactly what it was going to do regarding recruiting for its 2010 summer program. Here is the crucial part of Orrick’s July announcement:
[W]e believe it would be irresponsible to recruit a class for the summer of 2010 - a class that would normally join us in late 2011 or early 2012, the same time our current class of summer associates would be joining us after the one year deferral - until we know how many of our 2009 summer associates accept their one-year deferred offers. We need to prioritize the interests of our current Orrick summer associates over the law students whom we have not yet met and who would otherwise be competing for the same positions. For these reasons we have decided to shift our on-campus recruiting efforts from the normal time-frame to November 15, 2009 through March of 2010. After the November 15th NALP deadline, we will know how many of our current summer associates accept their deferred offers, and we will be able to better assess our needs for recruiting 2L associates for a 2010 summer program. We expect to reach out to 2L and possibly 1L students during this shifted time frame to meet our summer 2010 recruiting needs.
Well, we’re getting pretty close to November 15th. And Orrick has been placing recruiting ads at a law school near you. But some Above the Law tipsters are surprised that Orrick is doing exactly what Orrick said it would do:
I assumed that was BS though and figured it was just a way to avoid saying they weren’t recruiting at all. Given how things are going, why would they basically go to recruit fromt the bottom half of the class?
You know, when this whole recession is over, we are going to need to have some trust building exercises between firm management and employees.
Orrick didn’t lie back in July. They really are recruiting. Check it out after the jump.
Here’s the recruiting ad from Orrick’s D.C. office:
Title: 2L Summer Associates in Washington, DCDescription: The Washington, D.C. office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe is seeking applicants for our 2010 Summer Program. We are looking for second-year law students with grades in the top 33% of their class. We consider other factors, including Law Review, Moot Court participation, student activities and previous work experience. We also take into consideration attributes we believe are important in the practice of law, such as leadership ability, independence, poise and maturity. The weight given to any one factor varies with each application.
One tipster wonders if Orrick is setting its standards a little high:
They’re 33% guideline essentially is saying were looking only for people who have already accepted offers.
Well, you know, maybe Orrick doesn’t care if people have accepted offers elsewhere.
But it’s more likely that Orrick expects that there are 2Ls running around in the top third of their class that do not have offers yet. We are in a recession after all.

ITE, I doubt that everyone in the top third already has an offer.
Move over Cornhuskers, Iowa is first in BIGCORNLAW!
Do female Orricks in Boston shart a lot?
"They’re 33% guideline essentially is saying were looking only for people who have already accepted offers." This is a joke right? Maybe the statement would be true in other years but not ITE.
Doesn't this firm make vacuum cleaners?
Duke just went from douche to kinda cool.

What is "felching"?
There are plenty of desperate 2Ls out there ready and willing to fill the classes of TTTs like Orrick. All the top students have offeres, but Orrick never got those kids in the first place so no biggie.
I did a female in her orrick once. Does that count?
Elie said he "felches" with Lat. What dies that mean?
You know--you all make a lot of fun of Elie, but he pumps out a lot of news on this site.
--Not Elie, and not Elie's Mom
duke's been doing that for at least 4 or 5 years, 10. if i recall correctly, i think one of the women's health groups sponsored it.
Orrick is not being too greedy asking for top 33%. I am a top 33% and Dean's List plus secondary journal at a T14 and got 1 CB an 0 offers.
Didn't Kash show her Orrick?
they're guideline indeed
16- no. It is sponsored by the lacrosse team.
What is "felching"?
@15 -- when Elie was missing for one day on this site the other week, posters went crazy about how boring it was without him. This group here can't be satisfied.
I agree with many that ITE there are many very good students without offers. Any other year, and yes, Orrick would have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for its summers -- but not now.
17- I'll have fries with that.
How does having a "top 33%" requirement work? I've never been able to figure this out. Are they looking for a top third student at HYS? Or would a top third student from Michigan State work?
First, I'd like to let the victims of the Ft. Hood massacre know that our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Second, I'd like to commend the CBS and NBC evening news broadcasts for excellence in journalism. It can't be easy to resist the temptation to say the word "Muslim" even once during your broadcast, especially given the following factors:
1. The shooter's name was Nidal Malik Hasan;
2. As if that needed any further explanation, he was quickly identified as Muslim;
3. He reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar during the shooting;
4. It was well-known that he had reservations about his pending deployment to Iraq - you know, the place where America is at war with Muslim terrorists; and
5. He had previously been identified as a poster on a message board who equated a soldier falling on a grendade to save the lives of others to the nobility of Muslim murder-suicide bombers.
Kudos to the mainstream media for willfully ignoring the obvious in an effort to elevate "multiculturism." You're true patriots.
Finally, I'd like to give a "shout out" to the President, who so eloquently gave a "shout out" to certain speech attendees before addressing the Ft. Hood massacre. Even when disaster strikes, Mr. President, you still manage to keep it real.
How does having a "top 33%" requirement work? I've never been able to figure this out. Are they looking for a top third student at HYS? Or would a top third student from Michigan State work?
I have no doubt there are at least a couple of top 1/3 students at Harvard that don't currently have a SA gig. Elie, you underestimate how much this recruiting cycle sucked for 2Ls . . . and given that this site puts out little else but bad news, your underestimation is shocking.
I blame ShaFeef for all of this Allahu Akbar nonsense.
#25 - well put.
No peer firm has a satellite office located in Wheeling, West Virginia. That is all.
25 nailed it re Ft. Hood.
Re Orrick, the top 1/3 thing is flexible- they're going to hire whoever they want, but they're giving people with crappy grades a heads up not to expect a job.
28- absolutely correct. Was the shooter ShaFeef himself?
17= fat chick
ShaFeef is still alive in the hospital!
What is "felching"?
26, it works because they sent the ad to a single school. If they decide to sent an ad to you and your compadres at Touro, I am sure the requirement will be different.
It was not me in Texas. I was busy making sexy sexy with Kasheef's magic beaver.

#25 - How do you know that he was "identified as muslim" if it wasn't mentioned in the news?
26- a top 10% at Michigan State can compete for a job scrap at Walmart if they are lucky...
32 - No, ShaFeef is too busy obsessing over Kash's hood to have been the Ft. Hood shooter
WALRUS felch?
26 & 31- When they say top 1/3, they mean top-1/3 at the schools where they are posting openings.
Alternately, they mean actually mean top-1/3 at a particular school (Orrick said top-1/3 for Georgetown). The listing at Yale may be open to anyone and the listing at Harvard may be top-half.
Can someone please explain what "felching" is?
Ppl running Biglaw would FAIL in business school. Actually, they probably couldn't get in for lack of common sense. I guess that's why they went to law school and became flawyers. :-(

Is Islam a TTT religion?
Did Kash put a sheesh-kabob in her snatch?
The Ft. Hood killer could not have been ShaFeef, the victims were killed by bullets, not a scimitar.
65- he also was licking humus off Kash's beaver after sprinkling pita chips on her. Btw, what is felching?
Is Elizabeth Wurtzel EVER going to pass the bar and become a licensed attorney or is she just stalling until she can finish her "law firm life" memoir?? What an embarrassment. Also Partner Emeritus so clearly is not who he holds himself out to be based upon how much time he spends on this site alone.

Its a sad testament to the legal profession when students and attorneys are surprised that a law firms follows through on its promise.

None. Remember, they couldn't get into or survive B-school.
The bankers are now fat cats sitting on piles of money they got in golden parachutes or from Uncle Sam. They fattened their own pockets while ruining the economy. A+ in finance for self profit.
Sorry,
But even ITE, if you are top 1/3 at HLS and failed to get an SA offer you either:
a) were incorrectly told by OCS that it was ok to bid only for DC/SF firms, OR
b) have a deficient personality that no firm wants anyways.
- HLS 2L (bottom 1/2) with V20 NY
SF is an absolute bloodbath. Orrick will get a look at some fine candidates. VERY difficult to get any biglaw job in that market.
72 - Right, as reported by the AP. So lets not pretend the msm is dancing around the fact that he's muslim.
- 38
Idiots, don't you know the market. Orrick is not actually looking for anybody, they are just placing ads. This is pretty common among shitty firms what are trying to pretend they are doing well. I applied to this crap firm for a Russian associate position in DC and months later they told me they hired somebody. However, three months after that email they still don't have anybody new on their website that fits the position. They will interview you, waste your time and will never hire you. If they hire anybody, it will be a superstar - which does not mean your grades or school, but rather your father is a big shot at a potential client. Don't waste you time with this shit firm.
25: please take your time machine and return to 1950.
77,
I doubt you very much. Firstly, HLS has no rankings. There are no grades, only High Pass, Pass, Low Pass and Fail. These are essentially "Smiley Face" grades and the idea of ranking students with it is absurd.
Secondly, I know of HLS 2Ls who received no callbacks.

Orrick's rapid turnaround is impressive indeed, especially after it laid off about 120 associates (add dozens more via stealth) earlier this spring.
None of you idiots understand simple economics. It is Econ 101 that the best way to stimulate the economy is to raise taxes on employers and workers to pay for free abortions and health insurance for illegal aliens.
Whatever 82,
High Pass, Pass, and Low Pass ARE grades. There are just fewer categories than before. Having gone through OCI here I can tell you many firms had a baseline number of High Passes for giving callbacks (i.e. after looking at my mediocre transcript, the screener began the "so what can I tell you about the firm" speech...aka "fuck off you aren't good enough for us").
Yeah there are no precise rankings, but it is pretty obvious that someone with 7 or 8 High Passes (out of 10) will be top 1/3, probably higher. and someone with 1 or fewer High Passes (and perhaps some Low Passes) will be in middle to bottom. Needless to say, there is really no difference in the quality of summer associates that either of these two will become, so the whole process is stupid. I too know many shitty people with "good" grades who hoarded callbacks and many great people, more than sufficiently smart to great attorneys, who got shafted. I am just saying the system is BS, and if you HAD the high marks and struck out...well....see above.

How is it obvious at all?
38, you were responding to Walrus (25).
Walrus addressed the "CBS and NBC evening news broadcasts." Then, afterward, referred to (I presumed) them as "the mainstream media." I accused no one of dancing. I don't know whether what he said was true. But wouldn't you say it's different to put something in an online story than to say it on tv?
- 72

25 FTW
80, the Russian Orrick DC hired this summer isn't admitted to the bar yet- so no internet profile. He's a _Russian_ lawyer. He'll sit for NY in January and show up on the internet if he passes.
94 - Yes, it is different, but what’s your point? Walrus argued that the fact that it wasn’t mentioned in the evening news broadcast was evidence of the msm “willfully ignoring the obvious in an effort to elevate ‘multiculturism.’” My point was that it is now being widely reported (and not just hidden in some online story, as you seem to suggest). They also reported on those very same evening news broadcasts that the shooter was dead, when he is, in fact, alive. Is that proof of another effort to willfully ignore the obvious? To whom are they pandering with that cover-up? What do you think is more likely, that the msm was attempting to conceal the fact that he was a muslim for the sake of multiculturalism, or that they were just reporting the limited information that they had at the time?
Also, “I accused no one of dancing”…wtf? I accuse you of having asperger’s.
38
PE, I'm sure this has been asked before, but which firms do you consider to be a "peer"?
99, PE is discussing firms which he likes to "pee" on...and for those who don't know this site exists (no, I get that it's a "meme") here ya go:

49 and 54-you are both idiots. this is america, and you're wondering why black people are angry. have you taken american history? maybe the correct question is why are you so culturally isolated and ignorant??
I work at Orrick. They don't really want to recruit anyone. This is just about maintaining a presence, at least in a limited fashion, at schools. Though we are oddly busy, at least in litigation, and are actually having a bunch of our first years in various offices start early.
103 is correct.
103 and 104--which offices? Any of the first years in the second (March/January 2011) deferred group?
