UCLA Students Protest Fee Hikes
A tipster just sent in this video from UCLA:
Berkeley students, take note. That is how you cause a ruckus.
The AP reports:
About 200 demonstrators are chanting and marching around a UCLA building where University of California regents are scheduled to vote on a 32 percent fee increase for next year.Protesters from several UC campuses stayed overnight at a campus tent city to take part in a second day of demonstrations on Thursday.
UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton says 30 to 50 students also have staged a sit-in at an ethnic studies building and have chained shut the doors. They’re peaceful and are being allowed to stay.
Sadly, reports indicate that it is predominately college students that are involved in today’s shenanigans. Are all the law students already mentally beaten?
We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’ Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot - I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad.
Get mad, but stay safe. Rubber bullets hurt like hell.

FFFirst?
Don't like it? Move to a state that sucks less. Problem solved.
I hope we see more student protests like this. We need to bring back the spirit of the 60's and organize for change. The status quo sucks.
Waaaah! Society's privileged scream for more government subsidies, an even bigger slice of the pie.
I agree with 4. Vote with your feet...
Waaaah! Society's privileged scream for more government subsidies, an even bigger slice of the pie.
This bears repeating: They're bitching about a $2,500 increase, on a base tuition of $10,000.
Crimea River.
If they don't want a $40,000 undergraduate education, they can go be a waitress at Red Lobster.
Lex Luther had the right idea about what to do to California in the first Superman movie.
LMAO. I like the bike helmets on the police. Menacing . . .

Just to be clear, they are protesting a $2500 increase.
If my law school tuition only went up $2500 I'd consider myself lucky.
Did those kids miss the news of CA's budget woes? Kind of a big deal.
4/7 - Agreed. TTT.
GO BRUINS!
These people just want to stick someone else with more of the cost of their own education.
they no like tuition hike?! let them eat COOKIES!!!!

Why are white people so disrespectful of authority and riotous?
I'M MAD AS HELL...AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!
I thought that cop was about to break someones head open with that expandable club. Anyone who has ever handled one of those things knows that you can cause some serious damage with them.
It's only the UNDERGRADUATE fees that are only going up by $2500.
Law school fees are going up by nearly $15,000 over the next 1.5-2 years.
2008-2009 tuition was $28,000.
2010-2011 tuition will be $44,500.
University of California, Irvine, economics student Sarah Bana told the board,
"You are jeopardizing California's future."
Police arrested 14 protesters after they refused to leave the meeting room. As officers approached them, the protesters locked arms and sang the civil rights anthem, "We Shall Overcome." Others shouted "Shame on you." Some cursed.
My fellow associates, this is what we must do the next time THEY come for layoffs. We Shall Overcome ... someday ... after all, firms are jeopardizing 190K's future
the undergrads that want to go to law school are going to be much more affected than those law students that only have a year of tuition left to pay.
Going into the office to throw rags with vinegar at the managing partner as we speak!
I was in the middle of this crowd, let me share my impressions.
There were very few law students involved. Most of my classmates decided studying for finals was more important. They were probably right. What the undergrad kids lacked in knowledge was more than made up for by thier volume level.
The volume was so loud it gave me a headache. So I decided to leave. As I turned to leave one of the undergrad kids saw me and called me a traitor, and claimed that I didn't care. Upon hearing this accusation, I forcefully told the kid to look at me when I talk to you boy! I've given fucking 22 years to this country! 22 years! I've seen boys blown out of the sky over the pacific, their guts strewn out over rice paddies in Vietnam! So believe me when I say I give a shit!
UCLA to 45K!!!!!
Damn! that Asp baton can deliver painful blows. That guys backed the F up.
Has elie taken a cue from the magic circle and outsourced his job? Bravo on great posts today
law students are too concerned about this showing up on their moral character.
All of my friends have a ring on their finger. Well, so what.
So let me see if I have this straight. Your state is insolvent and yet you think you are entitled to more government handouts?
LOL at the riot gear bike helmets and tasing folks without visible warning, at least on the footage
It's just getting started...
Where is your Obama/messiah now (note I don't capitalize that second word). He was supposed to pay the mortgages and loans. He was going to take care of us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI
I'm sure B.O. will cut a personal check for my tuition this year.
We're not gonna protest . . .
Fight the power!!!!
Who'd have thunk it? The revolution will, in fact, be televised.
All the police need in this situation is a well placed Hades bomb. Problem solved.

isn't this just a way to get more student loans that will end up going to the school coffers on the backs of the taxpayer???
CHECK YOU HADES BOMB
isn't this just a way to get more student loans that will end up going to the school coffers on the backs of the taxpayer???
Biggest downside of these protests so far - being woken at 7 AM by television helicopters trying to cover this crap.
Undergrads: entitled brats. Compare your education to that of USC (roughly equivalent school and rank across town) and compare the costs. Now stop your bitching.
Law Students: In state tuition is moving to parity with what the other top public law schools have already done - basically it will now cost the same as a private school. Not that big of a deal for a top legal education.
UCLA's problem can be solved with a well placed HADES bomb. I think I know a man for the job. His name is Doug.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.
The revolution will not be televised.
There will be no highlights on the eleven o'clock
news and no pictures of hairy armed women
liberationists and Jackie Onassis blowing her nose.
The theme song will not be written by Jim Webb,
Francis Scott Key, nor sung by Glen Campbell, Tom
Jones, Johnny Cash, Englebert Humperdink, or the Rare Earth.
The revolution will not be televised.
The revolution will not be right back
after a message about a white tornado, white lightning, or white people.
You will not have to worry about a dove in your
bedroom, a tiger in your tank, or the giant in your toilet bowl.
The revolution will not go better with Coke.
The revolution will not fight the germs that may cause bad breath.
The revolution will not put you in the driver's seat.
The revolution will not be televised, will not be televised,
will not be televised, will not be televised.
The revolution will be no re-run;
The revolution will be live.
and in turn the schools are run by the State so it is just a revenue making scheme by the bankrupt California government???
In Dubai, these miscreants would have their hands cut off, god willing.
The students' ire is directed at the wrong source. Their hate should be directed toward their parents who voted for low taxes and massive amounts of social services.
It's not necessarily the administration's fault that adults in california can't do math.
Banking Secure.

The revolution will not be televised.
The revolution will not be brought to you by the
Schaefer Award Theatre and will not star Natalie
Woods and Steve McQueen or Bullwinkle and Julia.
The revolution will not give your mouth sex appeal.
The revolution will not get rid of the nubs.
The revolution will not make you look five pounds
thinner, because the revolution will not be televised
Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Hooterville
Junction will no longer be so damned relevant, and
women will not care if Dick finally gets down with
Jane on Search for Tomorrow because UCLA students will be in the street looking for a brighter day. The revolution will not be televised.
Notice that after they start hitting the gates, the fat cop reaches and takes a swing. Then gets pulled back by what looks like his superiors. If that baton connected, he would've been in a whole lot of shit.
46 and 51 - Home is where the hatred is . . .
It sounds like these kids are protesting the TTT-ness of their school.
I remember the good ole days, when we union thugs used to be deployed to beat students with lead filled pipes. Now, all we can do is beat up people who protest against Commisar Obama's illegal expansion of government control.
Staaaaate Schooooool
That guy didn't back up necessarily because he was in pain. It's clear the organizers were pushing everyone back (most likely because they didn't want to be held accountable for organizing a violent rally).
Have you not been in a fight? Adrenaline is a hell of a chemical, especially when you're 20 yrs old.
I think Partner Emeritus really left. Please stop publishing the murder novel.
45 = Roy Blatty.
And yes PE really did leave. Shafeef offended him.
I BET PROF. BAINBRIDGE WISHES HE HAD ACCEPTED UVA'S OFFER NOW! CA is going down the tubes.
Quote from a UCLA student on TV this morning: "I can feel my diploma slipping away. I'll have to take out a loan or drop out."
My first thought: "Oh nos! Not a LOAN!!! The horror!"
My second thought: This girl appeared to be the type that requires lots of lattes and visits to Robertson. I'm sure that she could easily save $25/month by making a few small lifestyle sacrifices.
At least one 2L was there:
(from the LA Times)
"Fees are going to be so high that people are not going to be able to attend this institution," said Kenia Acevedo, a UCLA law student who attended the meeting. "It is a devastation to what is supposed to be a public institution."
Okay, look, California kooks -- your state is going fucking bankrupt and everyone is taking a hit. You could have avoided this problem with less ridiculous social justice referendums, but no, that's the stupid way your state works. But I digress, massive cuts are coming from everywhere. As a part of the UC system, which is run by the state government, you need to contribute to fixing the budget, either in the form of massive cuts (firings of university workers) or revenue increases (tuition hikes).
Money doesn't magically appear because the big bad government decides to cut you a break. It's either make cuts / raise revenues, or have the whole state collapse. Come back to reality just for a second so you can comprehend this, as opposed to whining about how unfair it is.
It was people like you who got your state into this mess (waa, referendums to save the whales, waa, I don't want to pay any more taxes) and now, you're going to pay for it with increased tuition. If you don't like it, feel free to transfer to another law school and see how much tuition they'll be charging you. You had it good during boom times; now those boom times are over, and it's time to come back to reality where you can't get a law school education that cheap.
37 FTW!
Ohhh... that's why there were helicopters circling all morning. I thought there was a bad accident on the 405. Kept me up, damnit.
rioting is a legit pastime in LA. if there's a fee hike, we riot. if the bruins win, we riot. if the lakers win, we riot. if someone is convicted, we riot. if someone is acquitted, we riot. my guess is half the kids got sucked in by the initial crowd, then got pissed at the bat-swinging cops, but haven't a clue what the original protest is about.
This is crap. They are peaceful, so we will leave them alone. They've commandeered a public building and prevented it from being used for its purpose. Throw their butts out. If they want to protest, do it on the sidewalk. Stop preventing professors from doing their jobs or students from studying.
And, for kicks, they're violating the fire code. Insensitive commie pinkos.
Higher tuition leading to more student loans does little for the coffers of the institution. The lenders on the other hand (of which there are only a couple of primary recipients or "givers" if you will) are salivating.
The cop swinging that baton is a dick. Totally uncalled for.
To all of those talking about our unwillingness to pay higher taxes, California already has the highest sales and income tax rates.
Police with Beans in bag? Let them out now. Por Favor...
Do the students whose classes were cancelled today due to the Campbell Hall sit-in have a potential cause of action against the protestors?
-- Bored UCLA 1L
68: Do you think that it costs $20k-$30k to provide a UCLA, Berkeley education? No, which means that the UC schools may be breaking even at best, or worse, losing money on the in-state resident tuition students. In contrast, raising tuition means more dollars (whether or not associated with FEDERAL loans) coming into the UC system and in a larger sense, California.
I don't understand this "coffers of the institution" comment of yours either then. Students and young alums are notoriously small donors, whereas the people who would be donating a lot won't be dealing with any tuition increase since they graduated decades ago.
It's just not economically feasible anymore to offer the low tuition rates that the UC system was offering its students. It's either much higher taxes, higher tuition rates, or state bankruptcy. Given CA's already high tax rates, only one of the three sounds feasible.
Students can bitch and moan all they want but the fact is the Regents had no other choice. Higher education is funded from two sources: state money and tuition. Because of years of mismanagement states like California and Illinois can no longer afford to subsidize their state universities like they used to. So the schools are just going to have to raise tuition or close. These idiots should be in Sacramento protesting because it's not UCLA's fault - or they could just transfer right over to Cal State which is a fine but affordable school.
"Have you not been in a fight? Adrenaline is a hell of a chemical, especially when you're 20 yrs old."
Only if you're a brain-dead moron.
I hate it when people are always protesting and being 20 year old idiots. However, to everyone saying "STFU you are privileged" or "just move" would do very well in a dictatorship.
You grow up in this state always being told that if you study hard you have the chance of doing better than the rich kids that go to private schools... and it sucks to realize that its not really true anymore. Sometimes seeing how inefficiently the Regents WASTE money then jack up fees almost makes me want to act crazy and immature. Almost.
Just to be clear - this is a story about the undergrad side of the school, which is facing a $2500 fee increase.
Over at the law school the fees for IN-STATE are going to be $40,522, up from $35k this year and up from $26k my first year (2007). For those keeping score: that's a $14k increase over 3 years. I would say that's pretty extreme for a "public" university.
-UCLA 3L
76: It's mostly NOT the Regents. Sure, they're wasting money, but you're in complete denial if you don't think the problem is the massive funding decreases by the state because of its much larger and more serious financial problems.
And, this whole "do better than the rich kids that go to private schools" was a pipe dream being paid for by the taxpayers of California. There was no way the UC schools would have been continually able to provide a top-tier education (at least Berkeley, UCLA) for those minuscule in-state resident prices. It was the taxpayers funding your dream. Now that the economy is in the tank, that burden is being placed back on you. Such is life.
77: And to be fair, those are the prices that a UCLA Law education should cost. It's a top 20 school, and it's about time that UCLA Law students paid commensurate with the quality of education they were receiving. It's not the responsibility of the taxpayers of CA to fund your legal education. If you want to go to law school, then take out loans like the rest of us. We're in a recession, and everyone needs to take some of the hit, including UCLA Law students. You were getting a "too good to be true" deal and now, it's no longer economically feasible so the state has changed the prices to reflect the economic reality.
I know I might sound like a whiny bitch (since my law school tuition was still lower than most private schools), but I sympathize with the protesting students. In my 1L year, tuition was about $25K. 2L year, $26K. Fair enough. By 3L year, it was raised to $31K. A $5,000 tuition increase over one year? What, did my legal education suddenly increase in value? To the contrary, it is actually worth less now than it would have been worth in 2006.
I normally can't stand self-righteous grandstanding by a bunch of kids who are barely old enough to buy a pack of cigarettes, but in this instance, they have a point.
It should be noted, though, that undergrad fees would only increase to just over $10,000, which is dramatically lower than the tuition at, say, USC.
80: Once again, your legal education was UNDERPRICED during those first two years. The more accurate statement is that you got an exceptionally good deal during 1L and 2L, but now that the economy is in the toilet, California can no longer afford to subsidize your legal education -- you have to pay closer to what private school kids pay for law school.
Sorry, but those grandstanding kids don't have a point. You and they are completely ignoring the economic meltdown and serious financial problems that the state of California is having. What do you propose they do? Have the whole state go bankrupt and have to close schools down? You were receiving the benefit of going to law school during a boom time where the legal profession was in heavy demand and biglaw salaries were rising way ahead of public school law tuition. Now, the shoe is on the other foot, and you, just like the rest of the world, has to bear some of those consequences.
