UT Law Has the Most Depressing Job Posting Ever
I understand that “most depressing job posting” is a strong statement. The job market is awful and I’m sure that there are terrible listings that I have not seen. But I stand by my headline. As of Friday the 13th, November 2009, this is the most depressing “legal” job that I’ve seen offered to qualified law students.
From the UT Law career services offices:
Employer: The Ansari Law Firm Title: Legal Assistant/Nanny
That’s right UT law students. You are now being offered a job that you were probably qualified to perform when you were fifteen years old.
Reactions and the full job listing after the jump.
The Ansari Law Firm is an Austin firm that specializes in immigration and citizenship law. And they’re looking for legal help that can double as a nanny. I have a ton of jokes here, but they are all racist.
But you know what is particularly terrible? The nanny position is one of UT’s featured “jobs of the week.” A nanny job. Offered, nay, “highlighted” to students at the 15th best law school in the country. Welcome to the suck, boys.
A tipster has this wry report:
It starts in January, which could be a problem for 3Ls graduating in May, but only a college degree is required. Why graduate when opportunities like this await? Kind of like when Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. Don’t turn a huge sunk cost into a huge opportunity cost.
Here’s the full listing:
Description: I am a busy immigration attorney and new mother in need of an assistant to function as a part-time legal assistant and nanny. Duties include answering and returning phone calls; scheduling appointments; filing and other general office assistance, including preparing copies, faxes, and mailings; running errands; and helping to care for a four-month-old infant. The position begins January 4, 2010. Required work hours are four hours every morning Monday - Friday.College degree and excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Must be well-organized, reliable, and detail-oriented. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and have reliable transportation and a cell phone. Experience with immigration case management software a plus.
Please e-mail cover letter, resume, and three references to sonia@ansarilawfirm.com. For information about me and my law firm, go to www.ansarilawfirm.com.
They should also say “Qualifications: Must have read every installment of the Babysitters Club.”
You know, if you end up having to take that job, UT Law should refund you at least a year’s tuition.

excellent verbal skills required? how hard is it to say:

every five minutes or so. That's all my mom did for us and we turned out great.
And so it has come to this.....
Guess this answers the "why do people talk about the t-14" question.
Kind of hard for them to complain about not being T14 now.
I don't think that last part was supposed to be in the quotes. I doubt the person that put this up would make Ellie-like typos.
Qualifications: Must have read ever installment of the Babysitters Club.
Really? Just read it over once.
umm, I'm guessing that last sentence wasn't in the original job posting.
Roflmao....
"UT Law Has a the Most Depressing Job Posting Ever"
This would never happen in T - - - oh.
Well, apparently this did happen in Texas.
Lots of law students babysit to make extra money. This is not a "career" listing, it's a part-time job listing. What a non-story.

Kash,
I would allow you the supreme honor of also being the royal nanny to the children of ShaFeef.

According to the U.S. News & World Report Career Guide, the bet job in the United States, for the second year in a row, is Interactive Business System Analyst. However, last year's worst job, Assistant Crack Whore, has been replaced by a new worst job: Crack Whore Trainee.
Why are black people always so angry and belligerent towards white people?
14 is right, but this is still embarrassing.

I'm not sure which is worse -- this job posting sent to UT law students, or the Weil paralegal job posting sent to BU/BC/Suffolk law students.
UT should not have taken this listing.
32 - yes, I love it when I am in the check out line at the grocery store and the check out lady (black) is as sweet as pie to the black lady in front of me, then treats me like shit,

1: "a the" = grammar fail.
2: Elie, I'm pretty certain the "job" posting re getting a new associate to work for FREE was much more depressing than this.
34-- paralegal job is worse, it's for an actual permanent position. this is just a job while you're a student.
36 - you live in the wrong part of town.
I don't think they are posting this job for UT Graduates, but rather for UT students who want to earn a little bit of money while they are in law school (four hours a week, starting in January, only undergrad degree required). It may not be what anyone went to law school FOR, but in this economy it might be a decent option for a law student who needed some money now and was willing to work 20 hours a week.
A nanny is a professional childcare job. It often pays a salary and requires training. A babysitter is a temporary job of child watching, usually paid hourly. You probably meant that your 15-year-old readers were qualified to be babysitters, but not nannies.
Don't condescend to "inferior" jobs, Elie, it's unbecoming for a successful Harvard-trained attorney.
34, Northeastern Law has several paralegal postings on their job board, including ones at DOJ and Southern Poverty Law Center. Also, we have this gem, which MUST be one of the all-time best/worst postings - a fucking SALES position, commission-based, six-month commitment:

• Makes a good professional appearance.

Thanks to our prescient immigration policies, Texas already has an installed base of undocumented workers who are qualified for this job.

GREAT JOB POSTING: MUST LIKE CARTMAN (FROM CRAIGSLIST)
Are you working for a bankruptcy attorney and have come to the realization that you could make more on your own? I have been trying to get a bankruptcy firm running and primarily need help with Chapter 13 cases.
I am seeking to form a partnership with an attorney that has consumer bankruptcy experience and will share cases and very conservative expenses. An office, website (developed by a professional), marketing plan and technology have already been set up. The office is located near Union Station and the office contract allows the use of offices located in many suburban areas. A potential partner must possess the following:
(1) experience with the practice of consumer bankruptcy and knowledge of the procedural rules;
(2) experience with answering a high volume of calls and the ability to “close” with clients that are bankruptcy candidates;
(3) a computer, preferably a laptop;
(4) a printer;
(5) experience with Best Case software;
(6) sufficient social skills to network with referral sources (very important);
(7) email-enabled cell phone; and
(7) a car.
The overhead is minimal. A partner MUST (non-negotiable) be able to share in the following expenses:
(1) $315 for office space;
(2) $600 for advertising; and
(3) other routine business expenses (paper, ink).
I have been working with an experienced BK attorney that has practiced in the Detroit for 10 years. The problem I have been having is, I cannot handle the volume of cases that I get when I run a very effective advertising campaign, even with the help of the Detroit-based attorney. Since my partner is unfamiliar with the procedures in Illinois, I have a difficult time handling Chapter 13 cases (where the money is!).
My current partner and I are in our mid 30's, but have the sense of humor of a teenage boy, so we will not get along with someone that has a stick up their rear. If you do not find South Park funny and would rather hide in a closet than interact with people, this is not the job for you. Of course, we are professional in public.
My current partner (with more experience) would possibly receive some share in the profits for his contribution to cases (he usually contributes with answers to difficult questions). If you have 2 years of solid Chapter 13 experience, then the percentage of profit sharing with the Detroit-based attorney will be minimal.
Some of the requirements are negotiable and I will consider extremely motivated individuals that do not meet all criteria, but are willing to put in the time to learn the area. HOWEVER, I ABSOLUTELY NEED HELP WITH COMPLICATED CHAPTER 13 CASES (this is non-negotiable). For example, drafting motions, conversions to Chapter 7, etc.
You can work from home when you are not meeting with clients or are in court. You will also have the option to work in a nice downtown office (with internet access) located across from the Willis Tower.
I have been practicing for 9 years and have substantial experience with tax, estate planning and probate at a large law firm. I HATED the Biglaw environment. However, I have an extensive collection of estate planning forms and other documents.
I did not post any personal information to avoid strange messages. Do not worry, this is not a creepy scam.
PLEASE DO NOT APPLY UNLESS YOU ARE AN ATTORNEY LICENSED IN ILLINOIS AND ADMITTED TO THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS.
If interested, write to chibankruptcypartnership@gmail.com
39 - So Lincoln Park in Chicago is a bad area of town, huh....I didn't get the memo.
This is an appropriate job posting. During my 40 years of practicing in a large regional firm, I can say without doubt that the vast majority of female attorneys I encountered both in and outside of my firm were not qualified to practice real law. Paralegals, yes, but lawyers, no. Baby sitters, yes, but lawyers, no.
E=(T)^3
Why do black people always take their time when they are crossing the street?
60- I am sure that has nothing to do with the fact that such women had to work with male chauvinistic pigs. I have been sexually harassed by 70% of the men I have worked with. If you have been working in the field for that long, you have probably learned that the women in your generation that have succeeded are essentially men (and probably look like them, thus avoiding the great sexual harassment aspect of people a female attorney at a firm with a bunch of fucking dickheads.
Go F*ck yourself, then die in a fire a-hole.
62 - because you owe them honky, therefore they will take their time and inconvenience you.
Yeah, 63 sounds like she'd be a lot nicer to work with than 60.
59 - been robbed and/or raped yet?
"The Ansari Law Firm is an Austin firm that specializes in immigration and citizenship law. And they’re looking for legal help that can double as a nanny. I have a ton of jokes here, but they are all racist."
Haha. Normally you suck, Elie, but that was funny.

toby jones did this already, because he IS the american dream
63 - why is it OK to use sex appeal in the workplace? Men exert social pressure on one another not to use sex appeal - not to devote too much time/energy to grooming - by direct means (ridicule, etc.). In fact that's part of what professionalism is: being devoted to your work instead of your appearance. But women want to bring their sexuality into the workplace and flaunt it and then complain when it draws attention. Why? Wouldn't it better for women just to develop a professional ethos like males? Sincerely, Not 60 or 65.
Seriously, this is a dickish and pointless post. it's a part-time job. For a law student. During law school. Sounds like a halfway decent way to gain some experience working with a law firm while going through the motions during the 3L year. Beats waiting tables.
Would it be better to be black or gay in today's society?
Actually, I'm struggling to understand how this woman thinks that if she can't do her job and parent her infant at the same time, someone else (relatively untrained) can do half her job and parent at the same time.
As an 09 grad of UT Law who has a pretty sweet gig clerking, I try my best to help out my junior friends in the market. I've been able to help a couple find SAs and stuff, but that's about it.
It's rough out there. I fell ass-backwards into my clerkship: basically median and currently at a federal clerkship.
I understand that's not even feasible for T14 grads ITE. :/
Isn't it time for Texas to secede?
Geez, an immigration attorney can't find one of her undocumented clients to watch the kids?
69- 60 here
Please don't confuse my use of "69" to refer to you as provoking a sexual advance.
There are women like that, but this happened even after I started wearing suits, baggy clothes, little makeup, etc.
In fact, people at work didn't recognize me in my street clothes.
oh hell no. this is insulting. i'm a 2L, and i'd wait tables before i took this job. i babysat when i was 13 years old and did so in undergrad for some easy spending money, but there is no way in hell i would take this job. NO NO NO.
if anyone takes this job, they will be doing zero legal work. do you know what it's like to take care of a four month old? if you could take care of a four month old and work in the legal profession, then this lady wouldn't need a nanny disguised as a legal assistant. SO INSULTING.
14=got it (I didn't bother reading later posts, but I'll still rant far less briefly myself)
The attorney was advertising for a legal assistant/nanny, NOT a lawyer/nanny. It's UT law career services that chose to list or highlight it as suitable.
For that matter, since when is being a nanny in and of itself demeaning? Reading the description it makes total sense, the attorney needs assistance in two areas and wants one person to do both jobs. If the pay offered is reflective of the extra duties and skill required, what's the problem? If not, then don't apply/accept the position.
I find law firms advertising for unpaid help from law students or graduates (which I've seen, suggesting it is a way to "get experience") a lot more objectionable than this, a paying job.
If a SCOTUS justice advertised for a clerk/nanny (if such a thing were permissible or possible/likely given their ages...) there would be people leaping for the opportunity without feeling demeaned.
Ms. Ansari is a piece of shit macaca.
That's all folks.
This is almost as "good" as one recent law grad whose head hunter sent her a link to a Foster Parent job. These jobs may be demoralizing, even humiliating, but when you're staring down the barrel of $150k gun with the trigger cocked, better to swallow your pride than get shot in the face.
66- no, but there is much more robbing and raping on the South Side. We just don't hear about it because it isn't affecting whitey.
So, maybe we can blame the media for the biased coverage (that would be a first).
I just don't understand why black women are SO INCREDIBLY RUDE. Have you ever been to a Chicago Post Office? WTF? I am always polite and nice and it is never returned to me. End of story.
I hear that Schrute family farms in Scranton is hiring.
Not such a great offer with the 4 month old -- perhaps if she had a hot 17 year old daughter that needed looking after ...
73,
True to non-T14 form, you have no idea what you're talking about.
- USCOA
63 scares me. She probably worked for ShaFeef.
82 - I have been to many Chicago Post Offices. They are never polite, regardless of race or gender. It's just a Chicago Post Office thing. Usually they seem a little happier on Fridays.
Dear #79,
If I were to work as a nanny for a Supreme Court justice, I would be working for a Supreme Court justice.
If I were to work for this woman, I would be working for a macaca that does shit law.
If you cannot see the difference, I would guess you are also a macaca.
God, this chick is ugly.
http://www.ansarilawfirm.com/index.cfm/hurl/obj=351/AttorneyProfile.cfm
WE'RE TEXAS!: "What starts here, changes the world!"
But let's hope not.
79 -- If I worked as a Nanny for a Supreme Court Justice, I would put it on my resume. (I might leave out the "Nanny" part, but I would put in perhaps "Employment --
2009-10 Chief Justice John Roberts."
Its all in the spin.
I love how prior immigration law experience is a plus but prior experience with children isn't required.
86=sexual harrasser
89, she's not attractive but she's still Kuter Than Kash.
By including the words "legal assistant" Ms. Ansari allows herself to deduct the cost of her nanny as a business expense.
Her race is quite clever at things like that. It is why India is such a shithole.
Am I the only one who plans on sending dear Sonia an e-mail?
Did anybody else notice that the Ansira "firm" consists of only one person -- Sonia Ansira.
Guys, this is just a secretary/personal assistant job. Of course if a law student is stupid enough to apply, go for it!!!!
The "Jobs of the Week" e-mail is basically just a list of every job that got added to Symplicity that week. It's hardly a top 10 highlight reel.
--Former UT student who hated it, but still thinks Elie should check his facts
well this is stupid. being a college educated nanny is actually a really good job. i have my 1st degree in history and am currently working on a masters in geography. Families that require a college degree usually pay a lot. i work less than 30 hours a week m-f taking care of a 6 month old and i make over $60k a year. So think about it before you scoff at it
My T25 school recently had a posting for a paralegal position... I thought that was depressing but this is worse.
85
True to USCOA form, you wave your hands around and make assertions out of thin air.
73
I know other mom attorneys who have advertised for same and they feel like they are providing legal experience to female law students and giving them an idea of what it is like to juggle a law career and children.
79 again
@101 - I think I read within the past year (albeit pre-meltdown) that the average (mean, I assume) salary of paralegals in IT was $117K or something like that. Definitely over $100K. So being a paralegal in some areas, at least, might not actually be all that depressing...
As for some others, if you can't understand the difference between finding a specific employer burdensome and finding the nature of a type of job more generally objectionable, you're not even qualified to be a legal assistant, let alone a lawyer. You might or might not be qualified to change diapers.
This woman has an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore. Who'd a thunk that you need a college degree to find the buttons on a fax machine, change a dirty diaper and fetch her another Starbucks in your spare time? I am a legal assistant with 20 years of experience and never made a living "preparing faxes" for anyone. I have a clerk who does that -- no college degree required. Maybe one of her clients is better suited to babysit for her.
Yeah 103, how magnanimous. "Providing legal experience to female law students" while they change your kid's shitty diaper. Are you kidding? 104 is right on point on the salary range. Dollars to donuts that shitty diapers and the benefit of her "legal experience" isn't worth that much to Ms. Ansari.
Come on, it's not that demeaning & it's not like she's looking for a lawyer to also babysit her kid. I know of a couple of women solo attorneys who also paid their female legal assistant to help with their babies or little kids. It's a free market. I'll bet Sonia gets over a dozen applicants for this job. Also, some law students babysit professors' kids to make extra money; profs need help, and the student needs money. Kid is more likely to get a good-quality, educated caretaker. Win-win situation.
73:
Are you wearing a hat in the Clerkship Brochure?
107, as tho being a lawyer separates the wheat from the chafe? If someone wants to take on a part time job or make some money on the side, great. It does not however make both jobs synonymous with one another as this was advertised or for that matter, REQUIRES a college or impending law degree to take on. That my friend, is what so many found demeaning. "Kid is more likely to get a good quality ....caretaker?" Really? Nothing more than silly elitism.
Thanks for the pic of the Babysitter's Club book... it brought back fond memories of when I actually enjoyed life and reading.. aka... pre-law school misery. haha.. but really it brought a smile to my face :)
The Babysitters Club
Lalalalalala
The Babysitters Club

What 14 said. I'm at a T3 school and if that was in my city I'd apply in a heartbeat. It's clearly meant for people who have yet to graduate and are looking for PT work -- and it's a mix of legal and non-legal work? Man, I'm jealous.
And 34, I second that the paralegal job is way more depressing. I've heard of that happening more and more -- if you get a JD and become a paralegal? What's the point of the schooling at all?
The subtle sexism hiding behind snark in the article's devaluation of childcare is, I guess, not surprising. Still, it's sad.
I'm a t-10 law grad deferred from my biglaw job. and i feel very qualified for this and evidently not much else. any similar postings in ny??
Its pretty ridiculous that you are making a big deal out of a job posting such as this. I am sure in this economy she will get hundreds of applicants. Really the ignorance and racism on some of these comments is appalling. Wow, its so awful that someone is giving someone else an opportunity to work.
Another stupid topic trying to make something out of nothing. Since the job post is not directed at attorneys, it is irrelevant.
14 and 115 = pass.
ABL = fail
115 = macaca
they all think alike
This is why responsible law firms never hire women, take a look at #63's comments for an example of how psychotic women act.
If I knew her Bar, I would have her card pulled.
you rock 115
"I am sure in this economy she will get hundreds of applicants."
Is your name Sonia per chance ? And are you a shit law immigration lawyer ?
the woman is a lawyer!
here's an idea: get a nanny, pay the nanny what the nanny deserves.
AND
get a legal assistant and pay the legal assistant what the legal assistant deserves.
this "2-fer" thing only benefits the "new mom/lawyer".
And where is the baby-daddy!? Why can't he take the nany position!???
Number 18: Individuals of Indian heritage do not benefit from UT's affirmative action/diversity measures. Look it up. In fact, such measures are generally thought to negatively impact the admittance prospects of Asian students. If you were a first rate Indian UT Law grad, such as myself, you'd probably know better. Stay awake in class and stop trying to shift blame to others for your inadequacies.

Wow. I guess you really showed her, 125 and 126 (the post was so nice you did it twice).
If I had received this email message (in all caps, the email equivalent of shouting), I would've laughed and still felt pretty good about myself. Then, I would have deleted it. Twice.
That aside, I do think this attorney is a douche.
