Career Center: Holiday Survey Results

We received over 1,000 responses to last week’s Career Center survey on whether your vacation plans have been affected by the economic downturn.  The results reveal that almost 70% of associates are still taking vacation time, regardless of whether they have met their billable hours or not.  Less than 10% of respondents say that they are not taking vacation because they worry it might look bad.  However, almost a quarter of respondents report that they are actually too busy to use their full vacation time this year.

While most of associates will be using their "Out of Office" message this year, a substantial minority won’t be using their vacation time:

  • 42% of respondents report that they have met their billable hours requirement and are using their vacation time;
  • 27% of respondents report that there is no way that they will meet their billable hours requirement, so they are using their vacation time;
  • 23% of respondents report that they are too busy to use their vacation time; and
  • 8% of respondents report that they have not meet their billable hours requirement, so taking vacation would look bad.

Annual vacation time is generous at most law firms compared to the standard two weeks at most U.S. companies:

  • 29% of respondents report no set limit on annual vacation (vacation is subject to associate discretion and work demands);
  • 46% of respondents report that they have more than 3 weeks of annual vacation;
  • 16% of respondents report that they have 3 weeks of annual vacation;
  • 7% of respondents report that they have 2 weeks of annual vacation; and
  • 1% of respondents report that they have 1 week or less of annual vacation.
