War of the Farrens: Skadden Counsel Files $30 Million Lawsuit Against Her Husband

Earlier this month, former Bush White House attorney John Michael Farren allegedly attacked his wife, after she told him she wanted a divorce. Farren pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, first-degree strangulation, and assault last week.
The alleged attack — with a flashlight — was a brutal one. Mary Margaret Farren, who is also a lawyer, was hospitalized with a broken jaw, fractures to the face, and lacerations to the back of her head. She’s counsel in the energy regulation and litigation practice group in Skadden’s D.C. office, but claims that she has not been able to work since the attack.
An experienced litigator, she’s decided to sue. The Danbury News Times reports that she filed a $30 million lawsuit in Connecticut last week.

Last Wednesday, a lawyer for Mary Farren filed a civil suit against her husband at state Superior Court in Stamford. In an affidavit, Mary Farren asked the courts to grant her a $30 million pre-judgment remedy because she is injured and cannot work. She claimed she may lose income from her husband because he could be imprisoned for 30 years if convicted.

She also seeks to prevent her husband from using their assets — including their $4 million New Canaan home — to post his $2 million bail. John Michael Farren worked in both Bush White Houses and previously served as general counsel for Xerox. Even though he’s been out of work for the last year, Farren’s suit details $2.8 million in his bank accounts.
It sounds like Farren needs $30 million right now, in part because she’s afraid of Bush Administration goons:

“Given the community in which we live, and the station of living to which we are accustomed, and our plans for the future life and education of our children, the defendant’s obligations to support his children and me are substantial,” Mary Farren, an attorney for the firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, wrote in an affidavit.
In the lawsuit, Farren said she has lived in terror of her husband since the incident. She said based on her husband’s “past associations and resources,” she needs bodyguards and other personal security measures.

The lesson here is: Don’t beat your wife. Especially if she’s counsel at Skadden.
