Triple Trouble at DePaul University College of Law

This weekend, Tressler law firm partner Daniel Formeller will welcome three new lawyers into his family: his triplets. Matthew, Kathryn, and Christina Formeller are graduating from DePaul University College of Law (a top 100 school).

The siblings, 26, attended Illinois Wesleyan University together. When Christina, the youngest triplet, decided she wanted to go to law school, the other two followed suit. From the Chicago Sun-Times:

The triplets spent their first year and a half of law school in classes together. They say that the novelty soon wore off but the benefits were lasting. For example, they had a built-in study group with members who were critical but loving, and they did not have to adjust to roommates who were strangers.

In better times, it would be awesome to have three new law grads in the family. What about in these times?

Triple the grads, triple the law school debt. What are the triplets up to after graduation?

At this time, none of us are employed, but we are searching for jobs. My sisters and I are all interested in pursuing careers in commercial litigation, however, due to the current state of legal market, the three of us are keeping our options open. In addition to looking for permanent positions in private firms, we are looking into judicial clerkships and contract work.

Their father, Daniel Formeller, also earned his law degree from the DePaul, in 1976, and will be on stage to hood them this Sunday.

“I think they wanted to do this together,” Formeller, who is managing partner at Tressler, LLP, a firm he founded with five other attorneys in 1986, said.

“They have always gone to school together, but they had other options. When Christina decided she wanted to go to law school it caught on. The planets lined up right for them.”

Given their employment status, we wondered if there were any hard feelings toward Christina Formeller for not choosing medical school for them instead. But they sound upbeat:

“Practicing with my brother and sister would be a dream come true,” Christina said. “However, it seems unlikely that the three of us will find jobs together, given the state of hiring at firms these days. We always joke about starting our own practice: Formeller, Formeller, & Formeller. Maybe in the future that will become a reality.”

Maybe… We wish them luck with the job hunt. It sounds like they can triple team it, since one résumé fits all.
