Alternatives for Laid-Off Lawyers: Road Trip in a Porsche

So you’ve been laid off. What do you do? There are so many options: sulk; cry; send out résumés; try to sell your degree; spend time in the Above the Law comments section, complaining about your deadbeat firm…

Or you could take your 2009 Porsche Cayman S on a road trip across America. That’s what a laid-off sixth-year associate did when she got canned by her prestigious AmLaw 20 firm. The associate from an East Coast office is keeping her identity under wraps, so we’ll call her Porschia.

The “double ivy league educated corporate lawyer” started a blog about her adventures, called Driving with Gusto, which has beautiful photos of spacious skies, amber waves of grain, and purple mountain majesties.

While the Porsche is a manual, we wouldn’t say she drives stick. Porschia is a lesbian, and so there are many fun tales of hot girl-on-girl action from across the fruited plains…

From her Seattle post:

It didn’t take long (3 martinis at the most) before I got caught in a bit of a tug of war between the two hotties, with the brunette grabbing me and pulling me back from the blond every time the blond pulled me away to teach me a move, promising to teach me “a better one.” Eventually the brunette’s persistence won out and we ended up back at my hotel (after she ran off the blond and jumped in my cab uninvited). However, by the time we got there, I was totally over this girl (after spending the entire cab ride fending her off while explaining to her that I don’t really like aggressive girls) and I broke it to her that she wasn’t coming up to my room with me, which did not go over well at all…

Laid-off Porschia still got laid. Read on here.

Porschia has been roaming the country since March and has many stories — not all about sex; there were run-ins with the police, too — and is working on a book, which Jamaica Kincaid — the New Yorker writer with whom Porschia wandered the Mojave Desert — has agreed to edit.

So who is this mysterious woman? We asked about her firm experience. She told us:

Here’s the super quick, vague version from the side of the road outside Glacier Nat’l Park: 6th year at am law top 20 firm (in either the Boston or NY office)… General corporate practice (M&A, VC Capital work and everyday outside counsel to about 6 public companies and 5 private). Not sure why I was laid off (b/c perfect reviews and told to keep doing what I’m doing and how much everyone loved working with me in July) except that I was a lateral (maybe last in, first out rule?) and I was an out lesbian and they have never made an out gay/lesbian person partner.

So that rules out Quinn Emanuel as her employer.

Porschia is all kinds of L Word: lesbian, laid-off, lawyer. We hope she gets to add “lucky” to the list soon, by scoring a book deal.
