Funniest Lawyer in New York? This is Why God Invented Heckling.

It has come to our attention that a local comedy club is holding a contest to determine “the funniest lawyer in New York.” Could this be a train wreck of epic proportions? Based on the tagline in the event poster, all signs points to “yes.”

Oh boy. You know what they say: those who can, do; those who can’t, show up and make fun of those who can…

In fairness, this little contest might not be all bad. For starters, there is at least one contestant whom we already know is funny. Marin gets to be funnier than me every single week, and she’ll be one of seven contestants rocking the mic at the Broadway Comedy Club tomorrow (Wednesday).

Marin could be the next great stand-up lawyer comedian. There’s a history of this. Bitter Lawyer once did a round up of the well-known stand-ups who were lawyers — placing Greg Giraldo at the top of the heap. So the bar for these seven really isn’t that high.

The event is sold out, but there is a waiting list. It starts at 7:00 pm, a time that would probably be way too early for most of the lawyer-performers if not for the recession.

All seven contestants should be commended for taking the huge risk of even trying to do stand-up. One would imagine that the lawyers in the audience will be very nice to their fellow professionals.

Well, you know, one who doesn’t spend a lot of time around lawyers would imagine that. The rest of us know that this has the potential to be absolutely brutal. From the safety of our glass houses, we can throw some pretty large stones.

It should be funny, and if not, well — it’ll be epically entertaining.
