Career Center: A Report on 2009 Summer Programs

Now that we have kicked off the 2010 Summer Associate Satisfaction Survey, we wanted to share with you some of the highlights from the reports on the 2009 firm summer programs. If you are a current summer associateclick here to take our short survey about your experiences this summer at your firm.

  • The summer associate program at this Silicon Valley firm begins with a kickoff weekend at the Seascape Resort in Aptos, California, where, in addition to social events, the firm holds trainings and various practice group workshops.
  • This Washington, D.C.-based firm offers summer associates the chance to participate in its Public Interest Fellowship program, and split their time between the firm and local public service organizations for five weeks at full salary.
  • Summer associates at this Philadelphia-based firm, which recently opened a Moscow office, are paired not only with a partner and associate guide, but also a writing mentor.
  • All 14 of this "global" firm’s domestic offices have summer associate programs, and summer associate positions are also available in locations outside the U.S.

  • The most recent class of summer associates at this "laid-back" Midwestern firm will start in either January 2011 or January 2012, with no deferral stipend.
  • Although current associates praise this Midwestern firm’s "supportive" and "non-competitive" atmosphere, only a limited number of summer associates will have a chance to form their own opinion this year, as the firm has canceled its 2010 summer programs in all offices except its Minneapolis headquarters.
  • At this firm, well-known for its financial services work, summer associates in Los Angeles shadow two lawyers for the first two weeks of the summer and assist them in their daily practice, while those in New York share an office with a first-year associate.
  • The summer program at this New York litigation boutique has a relatively small class size (around 15 summer associates), to provide more personal attention to each summer associate.
  • Associates at this "IP powerhouse" practice "highly specialized work," and the firm seeks summer associates with a technical or scientific background who are interested in patent prosecution. 
  • This "entrepreneurial" firm emphasizes training in not only legal skills, but also business and leadership skills, and its summer associates build those business and leadership skills through its Business Challenge, a six-week team-building program.
