Jamaican Me Crazy: Harvard Law Hottie Wins Jamaican Beauty Pageant

It looks like Wyclef Jean can’t run for president of Haiti. But elsewhere in the Caribbean, visitors from the mainland are being welcomed with open arms. A reader at Harvard Law School reports: “A member of the Class of 2010 was just crowned Miss Jamaica World 2010. Not sure if she had an offer or is deferred or what.”

(Although she’s a freakin’ beauty queen, note how the tipster immediately turned to discussion of her law firm employment status. Welcome to HLS!)

The news is true: Chantal Raymond, who graduated from Harvard Law a few months ago, is the new Miss Jamaica World. As noted in the Jamaica Observer, Raymond will represent the island nation at the Miss World competition later this year, in Sanya, China.

Yes, we know: pics or it didn’t happen.

We have the pictures. And yes, of course the pageant included a swimsuit competition….

We asked our HLS correspondent if he had any additional information about Chantal Raymond. He responded: “Very nice girl, went to UF [University of Florida] undergrad, not much else… Her contestant bio on that website is funny, if you haven’t looked at it.”

Indeed it is. It begins:

Sponsor: Miss Geddes Refrigeration
Age: 24
Body Status: 34-26-36, weight 143 lbs, height 5 ft 9

First, congratulations to Raymond on her earlier crown as “Miss Geddes Refrigeration.” Apparently this Harvard Law hottie is so sizzling that she needs to be sponsored by an air conditioner servicing company.

Second, we’re impressed by her “body status” — those are nice dimensions. To paraphrase Sir Mix-A-Lot, “34-26-36? Only if she’s 5-9.”

Back to the bio. After reciting her impressive academic credentials — HLS, which she graduated from at the tender age of 24, and UF, where she was awarded a whopping nine (9) academic scholarships — it goes on to note:

Her desire in the near future is to be the CEO of a major International Corporation which has roots through Latin America and the Caribbean….

She is desirous of meeting Michelle Obama – a Harvard Law School Alumina class of 88. Chantal views the First Lady as an outstanding woman who has built a successful career promoting service and the advancement of youth, while supporting and nurturing her own loving family.

And she is desirous of Mrs. Obama’s killer biceps, too!

Perhaps Michelle Obama, a highly attractive and statuesque woman, should have participated in beauty contests back in her HLS days. For whatever reason, at least compared to women at other top law schools, Harvard Law females seem to excel in the looks department — and that’s not even counting Elle Woods.

Chantal Raymond is just the latest of several Harvard Law ladies with triumphs on the beauty pageant circuit. The one who enjoyed the greatest success as a beauty queen would probably be Erika Harold, Miss America 2003. She graduated from HLS in 2007 and went on to work at Michelle Obama’s former firm, Sidley Ausitn (although what Harold is up to these days is unclear).

The one with the most impressive legal career, however, would be Elizabeth Barchas Prelogar, HLS class of 2008. Although she didn’t win the Miss America pageant — she had to settle for being Miss Idaho 2001 — Prelogar won an arguably more awesome award: a coveted Supreme Court clerkship, with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Actually, make that two Supreme Court clerkships. As we previously reported, Prelogar was invited to stay on at One First Street, to serve as one of Lady Kaga’s little monsters. We suspect that Prelogar’s Harvard Law degree, as well as her status as a highly attractive female, didn’t hurt her during her clerkship interview with Justice Kagan.

But we digress. Congratulations to Chantal Raymond, Miss Jamaica World 2010, and good luck in the Miss World contest in China!

If Raymond actually is a deferred associate, traveling the world as a beauty queen is a heck of a way to spend a year off. If you have information about what Raymond is up to professionally right now, please email us.

The promised swimsuit pictures appear below. For more images of the pulchritudinous young lawyer, check out the Facebook group Chantal Raymond for Miss Jamaica World 2010. Fabulous!
