The 100% Summer Associate Offer Rates Keep Rolling In

This was a year of small summer classes. Fewer summer associates mean a greater likelihood that all will get offers… unless a law student does something egregious. (Good news for rising 2Ls: There are signs that next year’s classes will be larger.)

Latham & Watkins and Gibson Dunn had the biggest summer associate classes this year, with 110 law students each. We’re told that Latham gave offers to all of its summer associates. What about Gibson? Will it match Latham one for one? One commenter claims that 24 in the firm’s NYC office have already gotten offers. What about the rest?

We have heard 100% news from a few other brand-name firms. Some came with champagne, others with firm-wide emails…

The 32 summer associates in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis got their good news last week. They had been told it would be another week until Kirkland would give them word, but on Friday, the last day of the summer program, partners dropped by their offices or called them in the morning to let them know that they were all welcome back after graduation.

Were there any special festivities to mark the occasion? Yes:

Champagne toast at 4pm after we turned in our laptops and keycards and closed out our hours… We celebrated with champagne and drinks in the conference room with quite a few of the associates and partners.

Nice call, Kirkland. No morning mimosas a la Shearman & Sterling. Don’t get them hammered until after they’re done working.

No word yet on the rest of Kirkland’s 70 summer associates in other offices.

Down in D.C., Skadden Arps announced plans to embrace all of its summers, though that includes just 11 this year. The firm told them individually last week and sent out an office-wide announcement yesterday:

Subject: Offers to Summer Associates

On behalf of the Hiring Committee and the Attorney Recruiting and Development Department team, I am pleased to announce that offers have been extended to our entire 2010 summer class. Attached you will find contact information for each individual. Please feel free to call and/or email your congratulations and encouragement to accept our offers. We look forward to having this impressive group of students join us as associates upon graduation from law school.

Call. Email. Or take a page from Akin Gump D.C.’s book and ice them.

And the good news from NYC continues to roll in. Kaye Scholer made all of its summer associates happy. The firm had 13 total, 11 2Ls and 2 1Ls, all in its New York office. Last Wednesday, one of Kaye Scholer’s hiring partners sent an all-firm email announcing a 100% 2L offer rate.

Two blocks away, Freshfields gave all of its 19 summer associates offers as well.

UPDATE: We hear, via John Quinn’s Twitter feed, that Quinn Emanuel extended offers to all of its summer associates in New York as well. (Congrats, Hansel & Gretel! You can get lost on a hiking trip and still get an offer.)

This year’s summer associates can claim this motto: The few, the proud, the employed-upon-graduation.
