Who Is Yale Law School's Most Disgraceful Graduate?A gallery of seven rogues and a poll.

4. CLARENCE THOMAS

Positions: Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court; former judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit; former chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The case for disgrace: Would you like a slice of lemon in your Coke, or some pubic hair instead? Justice Thomas’s 1991 confirmation hearings to the Supreme Court were marred by ugly, lurid allegations of sexual harassment by a former colleague, Anita Hill. More recently, Justice Thomas has been criticized and mocked for his silence at Supreme Court oral arguments. (Over four years have passed since he has asked a question from the bench.)

The case against: He’s a freakin’ Supreme Court justice, for crying out loud. And despite some ill-informed criticism from (soon-to-be-former?) Senator Harry Reid, who once called Justice Thomas an “embarrassment,” CT has been widely praised for the quality and importance of his work on the Court. As Jan Crawford wrote in the Wall Street Journal, based on research she did for her (excellent and bestselling) book, Supreme Conflict, “Justice Thomas has been a significant force in shaping the direction and decisions of the court for the past 15 years.”
