Above the Law Launches New Column for In-House Counsel

The legal profession is currently experiencing sweeping and dramatic change, marked by such developments as the rise of alternatives to the billable hour and the increased use of outsourcing. Many of these changes reflect a larger trend: exploring how law firms can provide high-quality legal services in a timely and cost-effective manner, by focusing on the needs of their clients. In light of this renewed emphasis on the client, and in response to the demand for additional coverage of corporate legal departments, Above the Law (“ATL”) is launching a new column aimed at corporate counsel.

“Covering the in-house counsel world has always been a crucial part of Above the Law’s mission,” said ATL managing editor David Lat. “But based on the return of the spotlight to the client, as well as what we were hearing from our readers, it became clear that there was an even greater hunger for coverage of the corporate legal world. Adding a dedicated in-house column is just a natural extension of the Above the Law brand.”

Above the Law’s new column, to be called “Inside Straight,” will be written by Mark Herrmann, vice president and chief counsel for litigation at Aon, the world’s leading provider of risk management services and human capital consulting. A leading commentator on the legal profession, Herrmann — a former partner at Jones Day, and the author of The Curmudgeon’s Guide to Practicing Law — is no stranger to the world of blogging. He blogged from 2006 to 2009 at Drug and Device Law Blog, the leading blog in its area of law. Inside Straight will appear twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

“I’ve been out of blogging for nearly a year, and I was starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms,” said Herrmann. “I’m delighted to get back in the game. ATL is one of the most widely read legal blogs in the country, and I’m flattered to have been asked to contribute.”

“There’s so much to write about now in the in-house world,” said ATL editor Elie Mystal, “including changing relationships with outside counsel, alternate fee agreements, and the politics of corporate legal departments. We’re thrilled to have Mark joining us to cover this fascinating and dynamic environment, with his invaluable insider perspective.”
