Legal Eagle Wedding Watch: Thunder in the Night

Our last installment of the Wedding Watch was almost unbearably non-elite, but we’re happy to announce that the Times weddings section has bounced back. Three prestigious law firms beautify our wedding update today: Jenner & Block, Boies Schiller, and the ever-fabulous Skadden Arps. And two of our grooms (there are four) are partners!

Here are our lucky finalists:

DeVere Kutscher and Duane Pozza Jr. (Stanford, Jenner)

Esther Lederman and Scott Gant (Harvard, Boies Schiller)

Elana Bernstein and Geoffrey Bauer (UPenn, Skadden)

You can read much more about these couples, plus check out our round-up of all the legal nuptials, after the jump.

1. DeVere Kutscher and Duane Pozza Jr.
(Buy them a duvet cover.)

The Case:
– It’s been several weeks since we’ve featured a same-sex couple in this space. And what could be gayer than the name “DeVere”? Mr. Kutscher, left, has an undergraduate degree from Davidson and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. He works as the chief marketing officer for the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
– His groom graduated from the University of Texas and has a JD, with distinction, from Stanford. He’s a partner in Jenner & Block’s Washington office, and he was recently lauded as one of the Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 by the National LGBT Bar Association.

The Case Against:
– We were tempted to make fun of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, but we were stopped cold by its website, which informs us that it’s “Ranked #1 in the world.” And now we kind of want to go get an MBA there.

2. Esther Lederman and Scott Gant
(Buy them a salad bowl.)

The Case:
– That cutie on the left is a clergywoman! She has degrees from McGill University in Montreal and Hebrew Union College, and she’s the assistant rabbi at Temple Micah in Washington (where the couple was married).
– The groom graduated from Wesleyan and has a JD from Harvard. He’s a partner in the DC office of Boies, Schiller & Flexner. He also teaches constitutional law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown, and he is the author of We’re All Journalists Now: The Transformation of the Press and Reshaping of the Law in the Internet Age.

The Case Against:
– GULC has adjuncts teaching Con Law? Gross.

3. Elana Bernstein and Geoffrey Bauer
(Buy them an ice bucket.)

The Case:
– This bride graduated summa from Amherst and has a medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She’s currently completing a fellowship in rheumatology at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
– Her groom was cum laude at the University of Rochester and has a JD from UPenn. He’s an associate at Skadden.

The Case Against:
– Is this a Halloween picture? A cobweb — or perhaps an actual spider — appears to have landed on the groom’s head.

The Verdict:
– This comes down to a close contest between the Jenner and Boies Schiller partners. Both are First Amendment experts, but only one has won a Supreme Court case. In the end, we’ve got to give it to the Jenner guy and his handsome groom. Congratulations to all the newlyweds!
