Lawyer of the Day: Another Midwestern Prosecutor

What is up with state prosecutors in the Midwest? Over the past year or so, they’ve been making huge fools of themselves. See, e.g., Wisconsin’s Ken Kratz (of “I am the prize” fame); Michigan’s Andrew Shirvell (of “homophobic nut job” fame); and Indiana’s Jeff Cox (of “Use Live Ammo” fame).

Our latest Midwestern prosecutor to win Lawyer of the Day honors, Carlos Lam, also hails from Indiana. Let’s take a look at what this loser Hoosier did….

Here’s a good summary, from the ABA Journal:

Carlos Lam, a deputy prosecutor in Johnson County, resigned Thursday, after suggesting in an email that [Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker] fake an attack on himself to garner sympathy. The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism broke the story after examining tens of thousands of emails obtained through a open records lawsuit….

Lam wrote in his Feb. 19 email to the governor that the situation in Wisconsin presented “a good opportunity for what’s called a ‘false flag’ operation.”

“If you could employ an associate who pretends to be sympathetic to the unions’ cause to physically attack you (or even use a firearm against you), you could discredit the unions,” he wrote.

Don’t believe that a prosecutor could be this stupid? Check out Carlos Lam’s full email over here.

For someone who appears to be politically conservative and religious — note his email sign-off, “God bless” — Carlos Lam didn’t respond to initial inquiries in a very ethical manner:

At first, Lam maintained that someone had hacked into his email account. “I am flabbergasted and would never advocate for something like this,” he initially told the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.

Early Thursday morning, Lam called Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper, admitted he sent the email and resigned, according to a press release (PDF posted by Wisconsin Watch).

Jeez, Midwesterners, what is up with you people? Do you need lessons on civility from those of us here in New York?
