At the start of this contest, Latham & Watkins was the reigning coolest law firm in the land. But the defending champions were bounced in the first round.
The votes have been tallied, and we have a new champion. The Coolest Law Firm in the land, according to you, the readers of Above the Law, is Davis Polk. DPW crushed Sullivan & Cromwell in the final vote. It was a good run for S&C, but I guess people who aren’t attractive enough to work at Davis Polk want what they can’t have. It’s kind of like high school.
Actually, it’s a pretty big week for DPW. Not only did they win the tournament, the firm is now under new management!

Who is Davis Polk’s new leader?
Corporate department chairman Thomas J. Reid has been named the new managing partner of Davis Polk. According to the WSJ Law Blog, that makes Reid the coolest person in Biglaw:
There’s a new person atop the law firm that recently won Above the Law’s “Coolest Law Firm” competition.
And yes, without a doubt, that makes Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Thomas J. Reid the coolest person in BigLaw.
On Thursday, the firm announced that Reid, the 46 year-old head of the firm’s corporate department, has been elected managing partner. He succeeds John R. Ettinger.

Reid does sound pretty cool. First of all, he’s a Scotsman, which means that he might be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance to run this firm. Then, take a look at his picture and tell me that DPW doesn’t screen out ugly people (doesn’t he look like Colin Firth?). Finally, DPW is bringing on a managing partner with finance and international experience:
Reid, who hails from Kirkcaldy, Scotland, joined Davis Polk in 1987 and made partner in 1995. In 2000, he left to become a managing director at Morgan Stanley in London, then rejoined Davis Polk in 2003. He has since helped the firm grow internationally, especially in Hong Kong.
That’s an accomplished dude now at the top of a very cool law firm. Looks like he’s living the dream.
