For Legal Technology, Above the Law Needs An Entire Summit

Above the Law is partnering with the Electronic Discovery Institute to host a Legal Technology Leadership Summit from September 6 to September 8, 2011. We’ll be bringing together lawyers and technology professionals and offering a special track dealing with digital forensics, managed by the American Society of Digital Forensics and eDiscovery. And since this is ATL, we’re rolling to the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida.

If your law firm or organization is interested in attending, we’d love to see you. Click here to sign up now.

Patrick Oot, General Counsel and Co-Founder of the Electronic Discovery Institute (“EDI”), described the summit as an opportunity “to provide a setting where thought leaders from large organizations and corporate legal departments can collaborate on the current state of the law pertaining to various uses of digital information.”

Speaking for Above the Law, David Lat noted that legal technology directly impacts the day-to-day life of many of Above the Law’s readers. The summit will bring together counsel from many major corporations and leaders in providing cost-effective technological solutions.

Clients expect their lawyers to be using technology to keep costs down, lawyers expect technology to be intuitive to a bunch of people with liberal arts degrees, and Above the Law expects that putting all these people together will be good for the whole industry. Tech gurus, thought leaders, clients, David Lat and Elie Mystal, and a Florida resort. What could possibly go wrong?

ELECTRONIC DISCOVERY INSTITUTE — PRESS RELEASE

Washington DC – April 26, 2011 – Patrick Oot, General Counsel and Co-Founder of the Electronic Discovery Institute (“EDI”) announced today that EDI will host the Legal Technology Leadership Summit (www.legaltechnology2011.com) at the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida from September 6 to 8, 2011.

According to Oot, “The key focus of the Summit is to provide a setting where thought leaders from large organizations and corporate legal departments can collaborate on the current state of the law pertaining to various uses of digital information. The Summit will include panel and roundtable discussions, breakout sessions and social events intended to facilitate a meaningful dialog about current and future policy pertaining to electronic discovery, digital information privacy, social media and other technology-related matters.”

Oot continued, “The Summit panels will reflect EDI’s strong ties to the corporate litigation community. We will present ambassadors from every major business sector in panels which will be dominated by judges, in-house corporate lawyers, and IT professionals. We want participants to learn and share what is actually happening in major organizations, what’s worked, what hasn’t and what’s next. Further, we hope to raise the diversity bar by including panels with executive leadership from as broad a pool as possible.”

Another key focus of the Summit will be to clarify or make suggestions regarding a company’s obligations to preserve electronic evidence in anticipation of litigation. According to EDI President and Co-Founder Anne Kershaw, “A ’save everything‘ approach is no longer an effective method for preserving information relevant to legal matters; indeed, it interferes with preservation and drives up litigation costs for all parties, yet companies continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to retain useless and unnecessary data. Clearly, the over-preservation of data is a practice that must be corrected through education and changes in legal requirements and this Summit represents a meaningful step in that process. ”
