Shanetta Cutlar, Back in the News

Longtime readers of Above the Law will recall the colorful figure of Shanetta Cutlar. She was a high-powered Department of Justice lawyer who was known for her high-handed treatment of DOJ subordinates and colleagues.

(Read the blockquote in this post to get a sense of her antics, or read this juicy letter to former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, in which ex-Cutlar underling Ty Clevenger describes the “atmosphere of fear and paranoia” created by Shanetta.)

We haven’t covered Shanetta Cutlar since March 2010, when she stepped down from her post as chief of the Special Litigation Section (“SPL”). After she left SPL, she took a post in the Bureau of Justice Assistance, part of the Office of Justice Programs (“OJP”). This move was interpreted by some DOJ insiders as a form of exile for the controversial Cutlar.

We haven’t heard anything about her since her move to OJP — until now….

In this latest tale, Shanetta Cutlar isn’t the alleged villainess. That honor goes to Donna Murphy — no, not the Tony-winning actress, but the veteran DOJ litigatrix. Murphy has been nominated by President Obama to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia (not as fabulous as Article III D.D.C., but certainly a real judgeship — we’re not talking about an ALJ a la “Judge” Roy Pearson, of the $54 million pants lawsuit).

So here are the allegations about Donna Murphy, courtesy of The PJ Tatler:

Murphy is a die-hard liberal leftist. She worships racial preferences and agrees with the gospel of racial grievance. So Tatler was stunned to learn this story from inside sources: Some years ago, Murphy (who is white) was competing for the job of Special Litigation Section Chief at DOJ with a black woman named Shanetta Cutlar. Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd picked Cutlar over Murphy.

A few days later, Murphy confronted Cutlar on the street. The white liberal Murphy angrily tells Cutlar, “Shanetta, the only reason you got picked is because you are black!” Apparently even a victimized liberal opposes affirmative action! Cutlar, a rough and tumble woman, offered to fight Murphy right there on the street. Murphy, a bony little thing, retreated. As she did, Cutlar yelled – “that’s what I thought!”

Yikes. Based on everything we know about Shanetta Cutlar, she is not to be messed with — especially not by some “bony little” white woman.

Donna Murphy: Were you ever honored by Above the Law as DOJ Diva of the Day?

That’s what I thought.
