An Update On a Mercer Law Student's Untimely Death

A week and a half ago, we told you about the death of a Mercer Law student. The student has now been officially identified as Lauren Giddings, a recent Mercer Law graduate who was back in Macon studying for the bar. We have an update from Macon: our sources are telling us that the police have two persons of interest, but law students are still being questioned.

A week and a half ago, we told you about the death of a Mercer Law student. The student has now been officially identified as Lauren Giddings, a recent Mercer Law graduate who was back in Macon studying for the bar.

The body was found dismembered. Our sources say that the body was decapitated. Police still haven’t found all of the body parts.

We have an update from Macon. Our sources are telling us that the police have two persons of interest, but law students are still being questioned….

Here’s the update from Macon.com:

For days now, Macon police have said there are two “persons of interest” in the recent Mercer University law school graduate’s slaying, but no one has been charged with Giddings’ death.

Giddings’ fellow graduate and next-door neighbor, 25-year-old Stephen McDaniel, of Lilburn, has been identified as a “person of interest” and has been charged with two counts of burglary in an unrelated case. He remains in the Bibb County jail.

Persons of interest are not “suspects.” We told you about Stephen McDaniel in the last post. One source tells us: “[T]he second person of interest is just the girl who went into the apartment and she was handled with kid gloves.”

While the police investigation continues, safety concerns persist at Mercer. Giddings was found in Barristers Hall apartments. We understand that many law students and recent graduates live in that building.

And simply being questioned about the situation can be unnerving to students studying for the bar:

Police investigators are continuing to take statements from people who knew or knew of Giddings, who was involved in many law school and extracurricular activities and in the community, according to the release.

Investigators continue working to find out which people have alibis and can be excluded from the suspect list. Police also are reviewing statements taken as part of the investigation and are “tweaking” their timeline of events, according to police.
