Fame Brief: And You Thought Lawyers Were Only Dead Inside
Just when you thought TV had run out of legal drama series concepts, Sony Pictures TV went rummaging through 2004’s trash and resuscitated this old turd: Dead Lawyers.
The series, originally developed for the Syfy channel, follows “a hotshot defense attorney [who] is run over by a bus and finds himself in his own version of hell: a law firm on earth composed of other dead lawyers, all trying to right miscarriages of justice in order to redeem themselves.” Astonishingly, the show never aired.
But in the bleak 2011 world of Two and a Half Jokes, Cumulatively Men and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, Dead Lawyers just might be solid gold….
Legal AI: 3 Steps Law Firms Should Take Now
And rather than mess with the bulletproof plot line, Sony determined that the surest way to take this from sleeper to groundbreaking television sensation was to get rid of no-name lead actor Sean Patrick Flanery and infuse this baby with the explosive power of a celebrity: Uncle Jessie.
That’s right, John Stamos is BAAAAaacck, and this time not just for a guest role as a molester on Law & Order SVU. Stamos is slated to play the lead in Dead Lawyers, his first leading role since ER and Jake in Progress and the first leading role that anybody will have seen him in since Full House. Don’t get me wrong, I love John Stamos if Rob Lowe is not available, but if Sony is serious about making Dead Lawyers successful, perhaps they should consider casting someone besides a guy whose show-killing prowess rivals that of Ted McGinley.
If it turns out that Dead Lawyers is D.O.A., John should take career advice from his ex-wife Rebecca Romijn’s current husband and former Southwestern Law School student, Jerry O’Connell: go to law school if you want an acting career.
