Summer Is Ending, But Flip-Flops Are Still Hot at Quinn Emanuel

Back in June, we wrote about the lawyers in the Fashion Victims Unit at litigation powerhouse Quinn Emanuel. We were a little surprised when we found out that partner Bill Urquhart was allowing — nay, encouraging — all associates to dress über casually at the office.

As Vivia Chen of The Careerist so eloquently put it, it seems that the age of “jaw-droppingly sloppy” lawyers has arrived. Jeans and t-shirts are the style of choice at Quinn Emanuel. Instead of the clicking of heels, the most familiar sound at the firm is one that has been banned from bar exams across the country: flip-flop, flip-flop, flip-flop, flip-flop.

News of the firm’s kitschy footwear leaked during the height of its summer program. But did you really think that Quinn Emanuel would let its new-found fashion fame go quietly into the night?

Nah, neither did we. A tipster was kind enough to alert us to the firm’s latest venture into the world of fashion. CHECK YOU PUBLICITY STUNT:

I swear, sometimes it’s like these firms just want us to write about them.

According to our tipster, all QE summer associates received a pair of these firm-branded flip-flops last week. And with a 100 percent offer rate in its Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley offices, it looks like the firm wants its fashion glory faux pas to live on with its new crop of associates.

As a complete shoe freak, I still can’t decide if I think this is cool, but that’s mostly because flip-flops aren’t my thing. I’d rather wear a pair of gladiator sandals or espadrilles or peep-toes. You know, something that’s actually in style.

But perhaps Quinn Emanuel doesn’t care about being en vogue. The firm’s litigation record speaks for itself. And when a summer associate can get impressive “performance reviews” from two full-time associates and still bag an offer, the firm might think it’s above the law of fashion. And that is actually kind of cool.

So fine, I’ll give this firm the chance to strut it on the runway with its flip-flops. But à la Ru Paul, you better work, Quinn Emanuel.
