Career Center Survey Results: Top Partners to Work For – Washington, D.C. (Part 1)

Today we head into the nation’s capital to bring you six of the best partners to work for as chosen by our readers.

These partners go above and beyond the call of duty, and do so while working at some of the finest law firms: Akin Gump, SNR Denton, Hogan Lovells, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, Fried Frank, and Chadbourne & Parke.

Who are these phenomenal partners?

Paul Butler. An associate raves that Butler, an Akin Gump litigation partner, is “quite simply the best at what he does and absolutely wonderful to work for.” In particular, “he gives associates substantive work with clear expectations and deadlines, and is very concerned with feedback and our growth as attorneys.”

Jonathan Cahn. Some of the highest praise goes to Cahn, a corporate partner and U.S. head of SNR Denton’s Emerging Markets Energy Strategies group: “Jonathan Cahn is at the pinnacle of his field and works on game-changing projects (a subsea fiber-optic cable around Africa, helped write the post-Soviet constitution of Kazakhstan, etc.) with extremely diverse and interesting clients. The work he immerses himself, and his associates in, is more than just interesting, it is meaningful and transformative. His most praiseworthy traits, however, are not his intellect or his work ethic, it’s his genuine warmth and emotional intellect. Everyone down to the admin and even janitorial staff love him, while those whom he works with can be sure that he will take time out of even the busiest transactions to properly mark their and their loved ones’ life milestones, provide high-level mentoring, and be there to help you up and stand behind when times get rough. He’s a real, genuine, and amazing human being, the kind that seems extremely rare in the law.”

Glenn Campbell. A Hogan Lovells corporate partner, Campbell not only sets the bar for the firm in all survey categories, but is described by one associate as a “[g]reat person, who happens to be the best attorney I’ve met.”

Stephen Kranz. Kranz, a Sutherland Asbill & Brennan tax partner, “is widely recognized as one of the nation’s best professionals in state and local taxation,” “is extremely friendly and available to give you feedback and assistance,” and “always tries to include junior associates in big projects.”

Brad Lucas. Associates want to work for Lucas, a Fried Frank corporate partner, for countless reasons: “Brad is 100% a team player. When you work on his matters he makes you feel like you are working WITH him (as opposed to FOR him). He doesn’t micromanage and provides constructive feedback in way that doesn’t make you feel like a moron. He doesn’t believe in fire-drilling you for the sake of it, is pragmatic in his approach to issues and clients, and is a great teacher. Brad is someone that has earned the respect and trust of his associates. On top of that, he’s just a really great guy who loves his family, has a great sense of humor, and is someone you wouldn’t hide from if you saw him in a restaurant on a Saturday night — quite the opposite — you’d definitely invite him to join you.” Another associate adds: “Brad encourages associates (even junior associates) to take a lead role in managing client matters and is always available to answer questions and provide assistance. He is even available to help with matters he is not supervising. His breadth of knowledge is astounding for a junior partner. Even more important, Brad is down to earth, trustworthy, and the kind of person that you want to grab a beer with.”

Keith Martin. An associate praises Martin, a Chadbourne & Parke tax partner, for being “a leader in his field and a great mentor.”
