An Update on Judge William Adams (of Daughter-Beating YouTube Fame)

Earlier this month, a video showing Judge William Adams of Texas beating his disabled daughter went viral. Judge Adams didn't try to deny what he did (which would have been tough, given the video); instead, he defended his actions. Did the Texas Supreme Court find Judge Adams's advocacy persuasive?

Earlier this month, a video showing Judge William Adams of Texas beating his disabled daughter went viral. Judge Adams didn’t try to deny what he did (which would have been tough, given the video); instead, he defended his actions.

Did the Texas Supreme Court find Judge Adams’s advocacy persuasive?

Apparently not. CNN reports:

Judge William Adams, who made national headlines after the release of a 2004 video of him beating his then-teenage daughter, has been suspended by the Texas Supreme Court.

The reason for the action was not mentioned in an order of suspension that was made public Tuesday.

It’s theoretically possible that his suspension had nothing to do with the YouTube video. If you believe that, I have a lovely Spanish-style house to sell you.

Here’s what Judge Adams had to say for himself (in addition to our earlier Quote of the Day), in a statement posted by CNN:

“If the public must know, just prior to the YouTube upload, a concerned father shared with his 23-year-old daughter that he was unwilling to continue to work hard and be her primary source of financial support, if she was going to simply ‘drop out,’ and strive to achieve no more in life than to work part-time at a video game store.”

Note how Judge Adams diplomatically modifies the dig at working for a video game store with “part-time” — presumably so he doesn’t offend retail workers (at least of the full-time variety). He holds an elected office, and many of his constituents probably hold jobs that aren’t any more glamorous than working at a video game store.

If Judge Adams doesn’t end up returning to the bench following his suspension, or if he ends up losing re-election — the Facebook group Don’t Re-Elect Judge William Adams has almost 37,000 supporters — perhaps he can find work as a TV judge. He has clearly demonstrated the ability to draw an audience. And his temper, while not an asset for being a real-world judge, is a plus for television judging. Viewers love it when TV judges go ballistic on camera.

Judge Judy likes to refer to herself as “America’s toughest family court judge.” But we think that Judge Adams, who also handles family- and juvenile-court matters, has her beaten.
