Lawyerly Lairs: A Partner Sells in Brooklyn

A partner at a major law firm has put his Brooklyn Heights townhouse on the market for $10 million. Who is he? And, more importantly, what does his house look like?

Because, well, it’s already a matter of public record. As reported by Brooklyn Blockshopper, the selling Simpsonite is “Charles I. Cogut” — better known to the M&A world as Casey Cogut, one of the nation’s top corporate lawyers.

Cogut is a graduate of the the University of Pennsylvania Law School (which was just named the #1 Biglaw feeder school). He joined Simpson in 1973 and has been a partner there since 1980. From his Simpson bio:

Charles “Casey” Cogut is a senior corporate partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. For many years he has been a leader of STB’s M&A and private equity practices. He specializes in domestic, international and cross-border mergers and acquisitions; the representation of special committees of boards of directors; and buyouts and other transactions involving private equity firms….

Mr. Cogut is well recognized as one of the leading corporate lawyers in the United States. He was named one of the ten “Most Highly Regarded Individuals” in the 2010 edition of the International Who’s Who of Merger & Acquisition Lawyers and in the 2011 edition of the International Who’s Who of Corporate Governance Lawyers. In addition Mr. Cogut has been named in the top band in the practice area of Corporate-Mergers and Acquisitions and a “senior statesman” in the practice area of Private Equity/Buyouts in Chambers USA 2011: Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Cogut, and I can attest that he’s a real mensch. But don’t take my word for it; among his many honors, he has been recognized by Above the Law readers as a top partner to work for. Isn’t it nice when major rainmakers are also pleasant people?

Cogut clearly excels at dealmaking; what about decorating? Let’s have a look at his magnificent mansion….
