Lawyerly Lairs: The Real Homeowners of D.C.

Are we too New York-centric in Lawyerly Lairs, our inside look at the homes (and occasionally offices) of lawyers and law students? Perhaps. It makes sense that we focus on Gotham, since Above the Law is headquartered here. But we realize that other cities and states boast great real estate too. Today we'll check out a few Lawyerly Lairs down in my former home of Washington, D.C. -- including the expensive residences of various partners at prominent law firms....

They’re conveniently collected under the Lawyer tag at Blockshopper. This one jumped out at us given the caliber of the firm:

Carl R. Metz has listed for sale a two-bedroom, two-bath condo at 2725 Connecticut Ave. in Woodley Park for $515,000. Metz paid $512,500 for the property in September 2005. The 945-square-foot condo, Unit 0808, built in 1989, is one of the 68 units of the Woodley Plaza condominium development. It is part of Woodley Park Historic District. Phyllis Wiesenfelder of Long & Foster Real Estate is the listing agent.

Metz is a litigation lawyer in the law firm Williams & Connolly LLP. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerry E. Smith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

He earned his B.A. from Northwestern University and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.

When you take into account closing costs, Carl Metz will take a loss on the place. But that’s really not so bad, considering what happened to the housing market between 2005 and today, as well as the tax breaks that Metz has presumably enjoyed over the past few years (assuming he used this apartment as his primary residence).

Why might he be selling? Well, Metz recently made partner at Williams & Connolly. Considering the compensation of partners at the uber-elite litigation powerhouse, he’s probably in the market for something grander.

Not that this condominium was anything to scoff at. Let’s look at some photos….
