Staff Counsel

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has an immediate opening for Staff Counsel, its senior general counsel position. The position, in a department of two lawyers, involves managing the Association’s legal office and wide range of internal legal affairs, serving as Counsel to the Board and Executive Director, advising attorneys, faculty members, and administrators on higher education issues and litigation, public speaking, and appellate brief writing. The substantive areas include academic freedom, employment and labor law, discrimination, constitutional law, tax and benefit issues, and internal publications, leases, contracts, and personnel and benefits matters. Preferred background includes experience in nonprofit organizations and labor and employment, as well as higher education and civil liberties. Candidates should have demonstrated legal management experience, the ability to handle diverse substantive areas in a timely manner, and excellent writing skills. Appellate brief writing experience is a plus. The position includes general support for the Association’s committees and operations.

AAUP is a national organization founded in 1915 that is active in areas including intellectual freedom, due process, professional ethics, and university governance. Membership is approximately 44,000 faculty and academic professionals from all disciplines. Seven or more years of legal experience preferred. Membership in District of Columbia Bar required within reasonable period after appointment.
