A Government Job for 3Ls -- But Applications Are Due ASAP!(And job opportunities for experienced attorneys too.)

Get your cover letters ready, folks, because it’s that time of year again. If you’re a member of the class of 2013 and you’ve been scrambling to find a job for after graduation, you are not alone. The job market for graduating law students is still tough, so we try to bring our readers information about employment opportunities every now and then.

Today we bring you news about an arm of the federal government that is hiring graduating law students as well as experienced attorneys. But if you’re truly interested, you need to act fast; some of these applications are due as early as Monday night….

The entity that’s doing the hiring is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If you check out the CFPB website’s jobs page, you’ll see several openings, some legal, some policy-focused or administrative in nature. Note the high salaries for the experienced-lawyer positions, some of which break the $200,000 barrier.

Current 3Ls will probably be most interested in the Louis D. Brandeis Honors Attorney Program:

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a new federal agency devoted to safeguarding the economic strength and vitality of America’s families, seeks to hire its second class of Louis D. Brandeis Fellows to participate in its attorney honors program, starting in the fall of 2013. Program participants will make substantive contributions to the CFPB’s mission, and develop their legal skills through meaningful on-the-job assignments and rotational opportunities both in and outside of the Bureau. This is a rare public service opportunity to support the American consumer while enriching your legal skills!

These positions are located in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of General Counsel, Office of Enforcement, Office of Fair Lending, or other offices as assigned. Successful completion of the program normally will result in conversion to a permanent appointment.

Permanent employment? Good Lord, those two words are enough to make any would-be lawyer drool (not to mention law school career services officers). Check out the requirements:

Eligible applicants must be either:

  • Current law school students who anticipate graduation between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013; OR
  • Attorneys who graduated from law school after September 30, 2010 and who, at the time of appointment, have spent no more than one year participating in an activity other than graduate education, a judicial clerkship, a public-interest fellowship, or another comparable activity.

(And don’t forget that there are other job opportunities at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for lawyers with more experience — most of which also have application deadlines that fall on Monday.)
