Lawyerly Lairs: An Associate's $3.6 Million Apartment

Being an associate at a large law firm isn’t easy. Partners can be extremely demanding, sometimes unreasonably so. But because the partners sign the paychecks, most associates, especially associates with student loans hanging over them, have no choice but to obey. The associate’s fantasy of telling his least favorite partner to take this job and shove it is just that — a fantasy.

But not for every associate. Some associates are so wealthy that working in Biglaw is just something they do for fun. In today’s Lawyerly Lairs, we introduce you to an associate whose new apartment puts many a partner pad to shame….

We learned of this transaction from the excellent real estate pages of the New York Observer, which might have picked up the deal because of its celebrity connections:

Marion Dougherty certainly knew how to pick them. The casting director, who died in 2011, plucked actors including the young Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman from relative obscurity, placing them in the roles that helped establish their careers. Her taste in apartments wasn’t bad either.

The casting director behind “Midnight Cowboy,” “The Sting,” “and “Full Metal Jacket” among others, lived in a sunny, three-bedroom Greenwich Village co-op at 26 East 10th Street that has just fetched $3.58 million after a little over a month on the market with Janet Aimone Robilotti & Associates broker Kimberly Robilotti. Owned by Dougherty’s estate, it was asking $3.79 million.

Here is Dougherty’s New York Times obituary. Dougherty is survived by two sisters; perhaps they will be receiving the proceeds from the apartment sale?

Who purchased the Dougherty apartment? The Observer reports:

Buyers Michael Mufson and Michal Fromer took the place — a bit of an upgrade — after selling their loft at 225 Lafayette Street for $2.4 million to Mayor Bloomberg’s former deputy mayor Ed Skyler.

(The loft at 225 Lafayette, by the way, was also a pretty sweet apartment. Check out the listing, or read about it, also in the Observer.)

The Observer fails to mention what Mufson and Fromer do for a living. But all is revealed in their New York Times wedding announcement:

Michal Alexandra Fromer, a daughter of Ann and Robert L. Fromer of Kings Point, N.Y., is to be married today to Harris Michael Mufson, a son of Nina S. Saslove of Aspen, Colo., and the late Robert E. Mufson. Rabbi Howard Stecker is to officiate at the Pierre in New York, with Cantor Raphael Frieder taking part.

The bride, 25, is in the English literature graduate program at New York University. She graduated cum laude from George Washington….

Mr. Mufson, 26, is an associate at Proskauer Rose, the New York law firm. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and received his law degree there.

Fromer and Mufson got married back in June 2007, more than five years ago. Mufson is still at Proskauer, where he’s an associate in the firm’s renowned labor and employment group. He looks quite attractive, like a younger and cuter version of Paul Rudd. Meanwhile, Fromer launched Navy & Lavender, a fine gifts and favors company.
