Lawyerly Lairs: A Tale of Two Apartments

Here are two New York City apartments, both priced between $1 million and $2 million. Which would you rather purchase?

This apartment also comes to us via the pages of the New York Observer (one of my favorite publications; I’m a longtime subscriber and past contributor):

At least William Holiber will have plenty of newspaper to wrap his breakables in when he and wife Debra move into their new condo at 223 West 80th Street. The CEO and president of both the New York Daily News and US News and Report may be familiar from his work with all corners of the city, but he has thrown his lot in with the Upper West Side, forking over $1.97 million for a two-bedroom, two bath condo, according to city records.

William Holiber is a newsman (and Debra Holiber makes beautiful ceramic pottery, it seems). So how is this a lawyerly lair?

We’re going off of the past owners, Stuart and Randi Feiner. Stuart Feiner has an impressive legal background:

Stuart F. Feiner (BS, MBA, JD), served for over 30 years in a number of legal and senior executive positions with Inco Limited, one of the leading publicly traded international diversified metals and mining companies — Inco, one of the original Dow Jones 30 Industrial companies, was acquired in late 2006 by Vale, the largest producer of iron ore in the world and itself an increasingly diversified mining company based in Brazil. Prior to his retirement from Inco in August 2006, Mr. Feiner served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Inco for nearly 14 years.

So just like Ari Gabinet, Stuart Feiner also served as GC to a major company. Feiner is a 1974 graduate of Duke Law School (to which he has given or pledged more than $100,000). He sounds like one happy alumnus! (And he’s not alone; Duke has an “A” rating from its alumni, according to its ATL Career Center profile. Check out all the law schools, and their student and alumni letter grades, here.)

Now, on to the apartment. CityRealty describes the building, 223 West 80th Street, as an “attractive 12-story building…. Although it was built in 2005, it looks as if it were a handsome pre-war apartment building with double-paned windows and a nice cornice…. The building has an angled glass entrance marquee and a very pleasant lobby with mahogany entrance doors, slate floors and white onyx and pear wood walls.”

That seems about right. Here’s an exterior photo (click to enlarge):
