Musical Chairs: Litigators Leaving Goodwin Procter for Latham & Watkins

Three leading litigators are leaving their current law firm for Latham & Watkins. Who are they?

The relatively new Boston office of Latham & Watkins seems to be going gangbusters. Even though it’s just a year old, it already boasts at least 24 lawyers. (For what it’s worth, they seem to be an unusually attractive bunch; I haven’t seen such a good-looking crop of Boston lawyers since the days of Ally McBeal.)

And their ranks are about to grow. Above the Law has learned that at least three litigation partners are leaving their current firm to join Latham’s Beantown outpost.

Who are they, and where are they coming from?

The trio of partners is coming from one of Boston’s oldest and most distinguished firms: Goodwin Procter, which was founded a century ago this year. They are Ken Parsigian, Gwyn Williams, and William “B.J.” Trach.

All three are litigators. Parsigian and Williams focus on products liability and mass tort litigation, while Trach, a former assistant U.S. attorney, handles white-collar criminal matters and related civil litigation. They will be the first litigation partners in Latham’s Boston office; right now the Boston partners are exclusively corporate. Things must be going well there if Latham feels comfortable enough to expand from the office’s transactional core into litigation.

And all three have longstanding ties to Boston and Massachusetts. They’re all members of the Massachusetts bar, and they all went to law school in Boston (Boston University for Parsigian and Williams, and Harvard for Trach). Parsigian and Trach both clerked in Boston for the First Circuit, for then-Judge Stephen Breyer and for Judge Sandra Lynch, respectively. And Trach served as an AUSA in Boston (in between two stints at Goodwin).

We reached out to both firms for comment. Goodwin Procter declined to comment; Latham did not respond to a request for comment.

We’ll update this post after the official announcement comes out. Note that it might take a while. We broke the news of Latham entering Boston on March 8 of last year, but the official announcement didn’t appear until March 25. (Of course, if the deal falls through for some reason — and sometimes lateral moves do fall through at the last minute — we will update you as well.)
