November Lawyer of the Month: Mommie Dearest

The winner of November's Lawyer of the Month contest realized how empowering it can be to accept that you can't have it all.

It’s time to announce the winner of November’s Lawyer of the Month competition. Our five contestants all made the news recently for their deeds of derring-do, be they on the bench on the bike path. As usual, one of them stole the show, both in your votes and in national media coverage.

From Above the Law, to the Huffington Post, to the New York Times, November’s winner rocked the legal profession and caused many to reevaluate their lives — and ultimately, their happiness. As it turns out, sometimes the wonderful world of Biglaw isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Who won the contest this time around?

After taking home 41 percent of the overall vote, November’s Lawyer of the Month is none other than Ms. X, the Clifford Chance Mommy whose epic departure memo detailed a rather horrific schedule that reflected the battle between her work life and her home life. In the end, it was Ms. X’s home life that won.

It’s exhausting to even read her schedule, but it must’ve been even worse to actually experience it, day in and day out. No wonder she decided to pack it in and give up her Biglaw paycheck from Clifford Chance.

Does this sound anything like your life? If you just can’t take it anymore, then maybe you should follow Ms. X’s lead, and quit — because sometimes, it’s empowering to accept that you can’t have it all.
