Subject: NYU Law Dean Search, Alumni Update

Dear alumni:

Since Ricky announced last fall that he will be stepping down as Dean of the Law School on May 31, 2013, a Search Committee has been formed to recommend candidates to NYU President John Sexton. As chair of that Committee, I am writing to you today to let you know where we are in the process and to ask for your help. (The other members of the Committee are listed below.)

The Committee has been meeting since November and hopes to make a recommendation to President Sexton by April 1. We have had a number of wide-ranging conversations about the state and future of the Law School, the challenges and opportunities confronting the next dean, and the qualities we should be seeking in Ricky’s successor. A crucial part of the Committee’s deliberative process is hearing from our community on these issues: faculty and administrators at the Law School, trustees, representatives of the university, students, and—here’s where you come in—alumni.

At the same time, the Committee has begun to identify and evaluate potential candidates for the deanship. We would be enormously grateful for nominations and suggestions. You should know that we are entirely open-minded at this stage about the kind of person who might make for an excellent dean. Among the names on our list of possible candidates are law professors, practicing lawyers, judges, current and former government officials, university administrators, entrepreneurs, and CEOs. We are doing all we can to cast a wide net.

So: If you have thoughts about the major challenges, opportunities, and issues facing the Law School; the major areas in which the next dean will need to provide leadership; the principal qualities, skills, or experiences that we should seek in the next dean; or specific candidates we might consider, please write to the Committee at As I’m sure you will understand, the Committee cannot reply to everyone individually. But rest assured that we will make good use of everything you tell us, and that we will keep it strictly confidential.

I will update you as the process unfolds, but for now, thank you in advance for your help.
