Lawyerly Lairs: Partners Part With Pricey Penthouse

A power couple -- the former general counsel of an investment bank, and her husband, a Davis Polk partner -- sell their $6 million penthouse.

The interior better be nice, given the value of the apartment. The New York Observer reports:

[Noted Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang] and his wife, Hong Hong Wu, picked up the massive 4,120-square foot spread for $5.95 million — a price that would surely make his father, an ardent communist who “thinks Communism now is ruined,” according to his son, by the cultural and economic freedoms that the country has experienced since over the past few decades, wish for a Cultural Revolution redux….

Sellers Peter Douglas and Ulrika Ekman are both lawyers whose “artist in residence” credentials, necessary to live in SoHo, are unknown. They have owned the unit for 15 years, so we’re guessing they still made a healthy profit on the resale, despite not making their $6.25 million ask.

Investment success shouldn’t be surprising from a pair of high-powered transactional attorneys, of course. So what are Douglas and Ekman saying goodbye to? For starters, this living room, with a working fireplace and 15-foot-high ceiling of pressed tin:

(Elie questioned the classiness of a tin ceiling, but I assured him it’s all the rage these days.)

The huge room gets ample light, through the large windows facing Broadway:

And it’s not even the apartment’s most impressive space….
