Musical Chairs: Ted Ullyot Is Leaving Facebook

How much has he earned while at Facebook? And what's he up to next?

FACEBOOK — DEPARTURE MEMO FROM TED ULLYOT

Esteemed Facebook colleagues and friends: No, this is not another reminder from your friendly neighborhood general counsel about privacy training, or some litigation victory, or some new corporate policy. This time I’m writing to share some personal news, which is that I’ve decided to step down from Facebook in July. Needless to say, this is a bittersweet decision for me. Since coming on board in October 2008, I’ve been beyond fortunate to serve in what’s been the most challenging, most interesting – and wildest – legal job in the country; at the most innovative and high-impact company in the world; while constantly learning from all of you as amazing colleagues. It’s been an unforgettable ride these last five years, and an enormous privilege to work with all of you in helping build the company to where it stands today.

I couldn’t be prouder of all that we’ve accomplished over the years on the Legal and Security fronts, or happier with how smoothly the Legal and Security teams are performing today. But with Blake Ross no longer here to stir things up, the job of being GC just isn’t as challenging anymore. Seriously, though – this summer is a natural point for me to step down, transition the reins to a new GC, and figure out the next opportunity that (as Chamath would say) takes me out of my comfort zone again.

I want to thank Zuck and Sheryl for hiring me into Facebook and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, and for being the best bosses any GC could hope for. This company is in great hands with you two at the helm. And above all I want to thank my colleagues on the Legal and Security teams, who are great people and work really hard every day to advance the business, defend the company, and make a demanding job as easy – and fun – as it can be for me.

You all are not done with me yet: we have a couple more months together, plenty still to work on together (including selecting a new general counsel), and plenty of opportunities to say goodbye . . . or to talk politics, the latest Vikings news, or vintage Datsuns.

Stay focused and keep shipping.

— Ted
