A Federal Government Lawyer Bags Her Legal Career

Meet Danielle Vogel, a former Justice Department lawyer who recently launched a grocery store and farmers' market.

Last Friday afternoon, we ran a fun little item: a celebrity sighting of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor at the grocery store. Judging from the strong traffic, you enjoyed the story.

So we’re happy to bring you some additional information. As it turns out, the owner of the grocery store in question is an attorney. She left a high-powered legal career to launch her business….

Meet Danielle Vogel, the founder of Glen’s Garden Market, a D.C. grocery store specializing in locally sourced, organic artisan foods. Vogel first followed in her mother’s footsteps by going into law, working on environmental law issues at the Justice Department (through the DOJ Honors Program) and on Capitol Hill (as counsel to Senator Joe Lieberman). But then she followed in the footsteps of her late father — Glen Rosengarten, founder of the Food Emporium chain of grocery stores — by founding Glen’s Garden Market, named in his honor. She explains her move in this interview with Spencer Mazyck of Bloomberg Law:

It surprised me to learn that Danielle’s family wasn’t initially supportive of her new venture. Glen’s Garden Market brilliantly combines her family’s history and success in the grocery business with Danielle’s passion for environmental issues. As noted in this lovely Washington Post write-up, “The store is Vogel’s attempt not only to promote sustainability and local products but also to wean Washingtonians off those goods from faraway lands that contribute to global warming.”

Best of luck to Danielle Vogel with her new venture. Glen’s Garden Market looks fabulous; if you live in or visit Washington, you should definitely stop by!
