In our recent offer rate round-up, we suggested that the summer associates of 2013 might be a bit… boring. Based on the dearth of juicy summer associate stories, the outgoing SAs don’t sound very fun.
That doesn’t mean, however, that they didn’t have fun this summer. They probably did — because as we know from prior years, Biglaw firms know how to put on great summer programs (which bear little resemblance to what life as an associate is like; you all know the old joke about summer programs).
This takes us to today’s topic: which law firm put on the best summer associate event of 2013?
You tell us! Our summer associate event contest is always great fun. In last year’s contest, Weil Gotshal won by taking summer associates to the NBA finals. With 64 percent of the vote, Weil whipped the four other finalists: Latham & Watkins, Quinn Emanuel, Ropes & Gray, and Schulte Roth.
Speaking of Quinn, we’re not sure their famous firm hike will make the finals this year. We’ve heard some, er, interesting reports about how this year’s hike, in beautiful Zion National Park, didn’t go as smoothly as planned. If you can provide us with additional details, please email us (subject line: “Quinn Emanuel hike”) or text us (646-820-8477).
But maybe folks enjoyed the challenge? If you’d like to nominate the QE hike or any other Biglaw summer associate event for the contest, please send us a short blurb identifying the firm, the event, and why the event deserves recognition. The event doesn’t have to be lavish, just extremely fun. Last year’s runner-up event, Schulte Roth’s go-karting night, was far from fancy.
Please send your nominations to us by email (subject line: “Summer Associate Event Contest”) or by text message (646-820-8477). We keep our tipsters anonymous. We’ll collect the best entries, let you vote on them in a reader poll, and then crown the best summer associate event of 2012. We look forward to your submissions!
P.S. Maybe we’re wrong about this year’s summer associates not being very fun. If you have a funny summer associate story to tell, please email us or text us. With programs winding down and offers safely in hand, now is a good time to share. Thanks!
