Associate Position Available: Only 30 Years Of Experience Required

Who has three decades of legal experience but wants to be just an associate?

Here at Above the Law, we like to keep you informed of new and exciting opportunities for lawyers to get work. According to law deans, all you need is some practical training and a little gumption to take advantage of your super-valuable law degree, and we like to point you in the right direction.

Like Craigslist. Because nothing says three years of post-graduate education like fishing through Craigslist ads searching for employment.

Today, we’ve got a really good job for a part-time criminal and civil litigator. All you need is 30 years of legal experience under your belt…

Here’s the job listing on Craigslist. It gets right to the point.

Getting a J.D. = $120,000.
Getting admitted = $375.
Getting 30 years of legal experience = Priceless.

I assume this is a typo, but the thing was posted on Friday and still hasn’t been changed. I do love the thought of a person who graduated from law school sometime in the early 80s looking for his next job on Craigslist, but I think it’s highly unlikely.

Then again, I don’t think it’s likely that a person with, say, three years of legal experience is sifting through Craigslist either. Junior people who are lucky enough to have jobs aren’t leaving for new opportunities found on the internet, at least not voluntarily.

Here’s a question: would you really want to hire a person with 30 years of legal experience who wanted to be an associate? I mean, are you looking for George Clooney in Michael Clayton? You realize those people don’t actually exist. The only people with 30 years of legal experience who want to be associates are people who spent the first 25 (to life) of those years honing their skills while not dropping the soap.
