30 Under 30: The Top Young Lawyers And Policymakers (2014)
Do you know any of these outstanding young legal eagles? If so, congratulate them!
Here are a few folks we’d like to highlight (in alphabetical order; click on each person’s name to access the Forbes write-up):
- Josh Blackman: The prominent professor is most familiar to ATL readers as the author of Unprecedented: The Constitutional Challenge to Obamacare (affiliate link), as well as an active blogger and Twitter user.
- Adam Chandler: Like Ronan Farrow, Chandler is a Yale Law School graduate and Rhodes Scholar. And he’s gay — Chandler’s coming-out essay, a New York Times op-ed, went viral last year. He’s the first entry-level attorney hired into the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division appellate section in 18 years — wow!
- Jake Heller: He’s raised more than $1.5 million from successful investors like Ashton Kutcher to launch Casetext, which seeks “to make all the world’s laws free and understandable.” That’s an ambitious goal, but underestimate a former Stanford Law Review president and Ropes & Gray associate at your peril.
- Noorain Khan: We noted that this year’s list is lighter than usual on traditional tokens of prestige — so if you want to make it based on prestige, you need to bring your A game. Khan certainly does: the Yale Law School grad and Rhodes Scholar is currently an associate at Wachtell Lipton, and previously worked at such high-powered places as Goldman Sachs, Google, and the DOJ. In her spare time (haha), she contributes to Jezebel and serves on the board of Ms. JD.
- Blake Masters: He’s the co-founder of Judicata, a legal research startup that has raised millions from such leading venture capitalists as Peter Thiel — Masters’s co-author on the forthcoming Zero to One: Notes on Start-ups, or How to Build the Future (affiliate link). ATL readers may remember Masters as the guy who passed the California bar exam, the nation’s hardest, after studying only 100 hours.
- Jessica Schumer: The Harvard College and Yale Law School graduate — and yes, the daughter of Senator Chuck Schumer — has a high-powered White House post. She serves as chief of staff to Jason Furman, chair of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers (and brother of Judge Jesse Furman of the S.D.N.Y.).
- Nabiha Syed: The Yale Law grad and Marshall Scholar is already a go-to media and First Amendment lawyer. She’s an associate at Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, where she has represented such clients as The Guardian (of WikiLeaks fame) and Eliot Spitzer. She’s also a co-founder of Drone U, an online educational platform for people interested in the complex issues surrounding drones.
- Trevor Timm: He’s the founder and executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which supports and defends journalism organizations that report on secrecy and national security, and previously worked as an activist with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Timm, an NYLS grad, won the Hugh Hefner First Amendment Award for journalism in 2013. Like Syed, he’s also into drones, co-operating the widely followed @drones Twitter feed.
- Cody R. Wilson: The Texas crypto-anarchist, founder of Defense Distributed, is well-known to ATL readers as “the man behind the world’s first fully 3D-printed gun, the Liberator.” He’s now working on another interesting (and less controversial) project, a Bitcoin wallet.
These are just a few of the fabulous figures found by Forbes. Definitely take a look at the complete list, which is an interesting read. Congratulations to these 30 deserving honorees!
