In-House Counsel Rank (Some Of) Biglaw's Most Arrogant Firms For Client Service

Apparently your ability to provide excellent client service rises when you’re acting like a tool. Who knew?

Which Biglaw firms are the best? Which Biglaw firms are the best in terms of providing quality client service? Those are two very different questions. Just because a particular law firm is classified as being one of the best does not mean it isn’t chock full of arrogant a-holes (there’s actually a ranking for that). On the other hand, just because a law firm is overflowing with arrogant a-holes does not mean that it isn’t one of the best. It can be a fairly complicated equation, and general counsel are often forced to pick the perfect sweet spot when choosing outside counsel for litigation matters.

How does your firm stack up against the others, and how can you increase the likelihood that yours will be chosen to represent some of the biggest brands in the business? Being rated as one of the “absolute best” by general counsel in terms of client service will certainly give your firm a fighting chance.

Did your firm make this year’s ranking of the Client Service 30? Take a look and find out…

BTI Consulting Group conducted a comprehensive study on client service, noting that while 650 firms did business with Fortune 1000 companies in 2013, only 336 of those firms (only 51.7 percent) were nominated by their corporate clients for good client service — nay, the “absolute best” in client service. The consulting group then ranked those firms on a scale of 17 client service activities that are considered the most important to clients. According to BTI, “[t]his year’s list is evidence of the resurgence in client service excellence,” and 30 firms have distinguished themselves as head and shoulders above the rest.

Behold the top 10 of the 2014 Client Service 30, a group of the “best performing global law firms” that were able to “come back with a vengeance” after “refocus[ing] their efforts on clients and client service.” Did your firm make this year’s cut? Here it is, via BTI’s Mad Clientist blog (click here for the full list):

2. Jones Day
3. Sidley Austin
4. Morgan Lewis

BTI says that Skadden is an 11-year veteran of the list and has been in the top five for the last three years. How nice for the firm. What we noticed, though, is that Skadden was ranked as being the most arrogant firm of them all in the very same report. Jones Day, Kirkland & Ellis, and Latham & Watkins each earned themselves a second-most-arrogant rating from the same people who claim they’re tops for client service.

Given that almost half the firms in the top 10 of this list have been recognized for their general douchebaggery, it seems like you have to be a little naughty to get nice accolades in Biglaw. Apparently your ability to provide excellent client service rises when you’re acting like a prick. Who knew?
