Say Hello To The Most Influential Lawyers On Earth

Lawyers represent 14 percent of the list. Which legal eagles soared into the Time 100 this year?

8. John Kerry: America’s 68th Secretary of State earned his law degree from Boston College Law. His presidential hopes were shot down in 2004, but he still works in government because “diplomacy is in [his] blood.” Before shifting gears to politics, Kerry worked as a prosecutor.

9. Barack Obama: President Obama is a repeat honoree on the Time 100. A graduate of Harvard Law School, this two-term president is best known recently for the failed launch of his signature health care law. Obama used to teach Constitutional Law at U. Chicago Law, but now thinks that law school’s length should be chopped down to just two years. We’re inclined to agree with the man.

10. Ory Okolloh: A graduate of Harvard Law and an alumnus of Covington and Burling, Okolloh returned to Africa to “to build a more accountable, transparent world for millions.” She helped create the Ushahidi network, a website that posts reports of violence with the assistance of user text messages and Google Maps. Okolloh currently works as the Director of Investments at Omidyar Network.

11. Vladimir Putin: Putin, the President of Russia, graduated from Leningrad State University (now known as Saint Petersburg State University), the oldest law school in the country. He studied international law while there, and now bends those laws in his governance of Russia (see, e.g., the Ukraine crisis). A Tumblr blog dedicated to his shirtless adventures exists here.

12. Charlie Rose: Rose is a graduate of Duke Law School, and has worked as a journalist for much of his career. He’s now known as “the broadcast journalist who disarms the powerful,” according to his Time 100 write-up. Rose was one of the first to settle a class action suit filed by unpaid interns, bringing about waves upon waves of such suits.

13. Hassan Rouhani: The 7th President of Iran is a lawyer, academic, and former diplomat. He earned an M.Phil. degree in Law from the Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, as well as a Ph.D. in Constitutional Law.

14. Mary Jo White: The final lawyer on the list is being recognized for her talents as a lawyer. A graduate of Columbia Law School, White is an alumnus of Debevois & Plimpton who’s now known as “Wall Street’s top watchdog.” As the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, White is described by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara as “one of the most influential lawyer-leaders of modern times.”
