Cooley Law May Be Forced To Close One Of Its Campuses

Will Cooley Law be one of the first schools to succumb to the pressures of the new normal?

COOLEY LAW SCHOOL — EMAIL TO ANN ARBOR CAMPUS STUDENTS

To Ann Arbor JD Students:

This past Thursday, President LeDuc and Dean Vestrand outlined at student meetings in Ann Arbor the assistance Cooley intends to provide to JD Ann Arbor campus students who will be affected should the Ann Arbor campus be consolidated with other Cooley campuses at the end of the Michaelmas 2014 term. For your convenience, a recap of that assistance (available to JD students graduating May 2015 or beyond) appears below. Affected Ann Arbor LL.M. students will be addressed on a individual basis.

1. Each affected student will be given early registration beginning for the January 2015 term and continuing through graduation.

2. Students will be permitted to retain up to the amount of their current Ann Arbor financial aid budget, regardless of what Cooley campus is chosen, should this be desired (a process will be put in place to comply with Federal guidelines).

3. Each affected student will be offered a $1,500 cash payment to help cover the additional costs associated with the inconvenience of attending a different Cooley campus (e.g., lease termination fees, increased transportation costs, etc.) to be used as desired. The timing of this payment will be forthcoming.

4. Each affected student who chooses to remain at Cooley through graduation will receive in their final semester an additional $3,500 stipend to be used to purchase a commercial bar review course or to reimburse for the value of that course, up to $3,500.

5. For any individual students whose circumstances may require additional consideration in order to finish their program at another campus, Cooley will provide them with the opportunity to apply for “special circumstances review.” A procedure for this will be made available once any final determinations regarding the campus are made.

6. Specialized advising help will be available to assist with the transition. This will include individual meetings with Enrollment and Student Services staff to discuss, registration, financial aid, housing and any other issues that may arise.

We appreciate your understanding of this difficult situation and stand committed to your success here at Cooley.
