Supreme Court Clerk Hiring Watch: The Official List For OT 2014, Plus More OT 2015 Hires

How far along are the justices in their October Term 2015 hiring?

As the Supreme Court’s October Term 2013 fades into memory, and the bickering over Hobby Lobby subsides, let’s look ahead to October Term 2014 — and beyond. We know now the identities of all the OT 2014 SCOTUS clerks, as well as a growing number of the clerks for October Term 2015.

The clerk hiring contains some bad news for Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and other liberals who want Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to retire before it’s too late. The Notorious RBG has picked her posse for OT 2015, suggesting that she won’t be leaving the Court anytime soon.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First let’s look at the official list of Supreme Court law clerks for October Term 2014, starting up in just a few months….

As they do every year, the wonderful folks in the Court’s Public Information Office (PIO) provided us with the official list of incoming law clerks. This list does not include law school and prior clerkship information, which the PIO will release later this year, but the document confirms all of the crowdsourced hiring information we have gathered on our own. You can access the list here, as a PDF file.

Thanks to the official list, we now know the name of the “missing” clerk to Justice Ginsburg for OT 2014: Anitha Reddy (the lawyer, not the fashion designer). Since she’s the last clerk to be uncovered, we will, consistent with ATL tradition, give her more detailed coverage than the other clerks. (Think of this as the SCOTUS clerk version of the NFL draft’s Mr. Irrelevant.)

We had previously stated, upon information and belief, that the missing RBG clerk clerked for Judge Pierre Leval (2d Cir.) and worked at Wachtell Lipton. It turns out that our information was correct, as you can see from Reddy’s Wachtell bio (no longer live on the website, but we grabbed a copy):

Anitha Reddy is an associate in the Litigation Department.

Anitha Reddy graduated magna cum laude from Stanford University in 2002. She graduated in 2008 from Stanford Law School, where she served as managing editor of the Stanford Law Review. After law school, Ms. Reddy served as a law clerk to the Honorable John Gleeson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and to the Honorable Pierre N. Leval of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Some might say that a 2008 law school grad is perhaps a little long in the tooth to be a SCOTUS clerk for OT 2014. But surely Justice Ginsburg, resisting all the retirement pressure, can appreciate someone who doesn’t conform to stereotypical notions of what’s age-appropriate. And Reddy is far from Justice Ginsburg’s oldest clerk ever. Back in October Term 1996, RBG hired William Hodes, a law professor who had received his J.D. degree from Rutgers back in 1969.

Now, on to the lists. We hear that at least three justices — Justices Scalia, Ginsburg, and Kagan — have completed their OT 2015 clerk hiring (and Justice Kagan, you’ll see below, has already hired one clerk for OT 2016). If you have additions or corrections, please email us (subject line: “SCOTUS clerk hiring”) or text us (646-820-8477). Thank you!

P.S. Shameless plug: speaking of the quest for SCOTUS clerkships, my forthcoming novel, Supreme Ambitions (affiliate link), will be published by an imprint of the ABA in a few months. It’s now available for pre-ordering on Amazon in case anyone might be interested.
