Shut Up Everybody, New 1L Is Going To Explain How Smart He Is

Now, some naysayers would suggest that a 1L a few days into their law school career has no place calling out the work of those who've come before as irrelevant and untrue. Ignore those voices.

Pack it in everybody! Mere days into the new year, there’s a 1L out there who has the “law” all figured out. He can isolate the relevant aspects of a case at first glance and his agile mind can dismiss a flawed reading with ease. He’s so prepared that he’s already talking smack about law school graduates. And he did it all on Facebook so we can see how smart he is. We are truly living in blessed times. He will restore balance to the law!

Now, some naysayers would suggest that a 1L a few days into their law school career has no place calling out the work of those who’ve come before as irrelevant and untrue. That perhaps singling out by name a law school graduate and questioning his legal acumen was excessive for a mere pup. Ignore those voices. You can’t silence genius like this.

Or arrogance like this….

There’s always a population of 1Ls who think they’ve got it all figured out. They’ve been told they’re precious intellectual snowflakes since Kindergarten and assume picking up the law is as easy as everything else in their charmed academic life. But usually, somewhere along the way, someone told them to keep their trap shut before calling people out.

And definitely slow your roll when you’re going to… well, it’s a fine school, but let’s just say it’s not in the ATL Top 50.

I’ve protected the names to protect the 1L and former 1L at issue. Could we publicly shame them? Sure, but I use kid gloves on 1Ls. I’m not going to publicly ridicule them for not understanding the world as a 1L — they don’t know any better. I mean, to do that would make me exactly like this kid, I guess.

As for the now infamous former 1L, a cursory Internet search — which the 1L was unwilling to perform before mouthing off — reveals that the book’s former owner not only stayed in the law and graduated, but currently works as an Assistant District Attorney in a major metropolitan city. I guess that doesn’t guarantee that his legal skills have improved, but it’s certainly a positive indicator. Perhaps he’s grown and would look back with embarrassment on the stuff he did in his first few weeks of law school.

Just like the current 1L will with this post.
