Reality TV Star Claims She 'Didn't Understand' That Her Plea Agreement Meant Possible Jail Time

Perhaps Teresa Giudice’s lawyer didn’t understand that his client was so dense.

It’s time for me to wake up. I do need to read things before I sign them. I do need to understand things before I sign them. … I gotta make sure I fully understand something, or fully read it, or find a lawyer — like a contract lawyer — that could help me. Because, you know, I don’t read contracts every day.

— Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice, explaining some of the ways she plans to change her life in the wake of receiving a 15-month sentence for mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. She’ll report to prison on January 5, 2015.

(Giudice claims she was “shocked” to have received a prison sentence, even after signing a plea agreement that called for up to 27 months of jail for her crimes. Why was she so shocked? The answer might make your brain hurt.)

In her first interview since her sentencing, Teresa Giudice revealed on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that she “didn’t understand” the terms of her plea agreement:

Andy Cohen: Why did you accept a plea agreement that would send you to prison for 27 months?

Teresa Giudice: I didn’t understand that part.

Andy Cohen: You didn’t?

Teresa Giudice: No.

Andy Cohen: Did your lawyer not tell you what that meant?

Teresa Giudice: I didn’t fully understand it.

Andy Cohen: What did you think would happen after you accepted that plea deal?

Teresa Giudice: I don’t know, I just thought my lawyer was going to fight for me. That’s what lawyers do. I dunno, that’s why you hire an attorney. You put it in their hands.

Perhaps Giudice’s lawyer, Henry Klingeman, didn’t understand that his client was so dense.
